Poland's Artur Mlynarz collects, repairs and restores classic hi-fi equipment. Sometimes though, units come in that are beyond help. Wanting to bring new life to vintage cassette decks, he mounted a smartphone into a broken player, and the MP3 Tapeless Deck Project soon followed. Now he has old gear sitting around waiting for someone to give him the nod, then breaks out his tools and converts a chosen model to a modern digital music player.

Honestly I'd rather see these old things converted into something useful than just thrown away.

A totally useless mod in my opinion except that it looks really cool. Why? The phone could simply be hooked up directly to whatever amp is currently connected. The deck can’t record, can’t amplify, still needs to be connected to an external amplifier (something that the phone itself merely needs a proper cable to do), in other words, the deck is now a glorified phone dock/cradle. Although, it is admittedly a very cool looking one.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks fantastic. Better than ending up in a land fill

Look video on 45 sec. and you can see that output level can adjust with rec level knob.
Phone out is connected to deck line in, deck is in rec-pause mode, with rec level knob can adjust output level (deck line out).

I think this is cool idea, but maybe need some adjustment and mods
In this version - if you want to add, remove or replace music files, you can do this wireless.
look here: http://www.mp3tapelessdeck.pl/tutorial.html

Maybe it's simple to use micro sd cable extension,
and when phone is off, to replace mini sd card with another card.

The original cassette tape would sound much better.
You must have some serious equipment.
My best deck was pretty decent, but it couldn't hold a candle to a lossless FLAC (or even a 320 MP#) on it's best day, with pure metal tape.
