Wow! :-D

Reel-to-reel in a portable boombox!

I wonder how many other manufacturers went along this route before (and maybe even after) the compact cassette became popular?

Does anyone else know of any other portable reel-to-reel boomboxes?

And when I say "portable reel-to-reel boomboxes" it has to have the same criteria as a cassette boombox:

(1) handle
(2) battery-powered
(3) portable
(4) able to be carried while playing

My be one-piece or more, but rule no. 4 applies.

As an example, the Panasonic RX-A5 is portable, battery powered and has a handle, *BUT* flops at rule no. 4, as this unit cannot be carried while playing, as the speakers don't attach to the main unit.

So, there we are. Does anyone know of any other portable reel-to-reel boomboxes?

It would be nice to see and compare.

Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a DOUBLE reel-to-reel portable boombox? :-D

That's a really cool toy, AZA!! How long have you had that one?

I picked it up only a couple of years ago now from a swap meet.
The very interesting thing about this unit FD is the recordings that are on the two
mini reels that came with it.
A young family that had migrated from England to Australia that consisted of the two
parents and a small boy and girl, maybe around 5 and 7, had recorded thier then current
living situation and well wishes to the Grandparents back in England. I presume to send to them
as you would a letter.
The recordings where made over a number of weeks on and off by all of the family taking turns
and they where recorded in 1972 :-O
The area the family spoke about is only about 150km away from where i currently live but the same area
i once lived and went to school.
It is an amazing time capsule that i have listened to often :-)
They talk about school and the struggle to find work. But they mention the new Aluminium plant
that is supposed to be built there soon and that perhaps he (the father) will get work there.
Of course thats been there now for 35 years and even a friend of mine that i went to school
with works there !
They also spoke of next doors new flash car that races up and down the street
and how different it seems to them. Turns out to be a Valiant Charger. Classic  What i
wouldnt give to go back in time to 1972 and buy one of those off the showroom floor !!
Anyway it is all very interesting and as i said an incredible time capsule of the area 37 years ago.
I dont know if the grandparents ever got it because obviously the recordings are still here in
Australia :sadno:

What a fantastic piece of personal history you have there, AZA. Have you ever tried to locate the original owners? I think that would be the most gratifying adventure if you found them and played the recording for them.

Thanks for sharing with us! :-)

There is a television show here in Australia called Can We Help.
They help people locate lost friends and family or connect people with thier
old belongings such as medals or photos etc. There is probably similar shows
like this around the world i would think.
So yes i have often thought about getting in contact with the production team
of this show. I think i will make an effort to do so now. Will let everyone know
what eventuates from it.
I think you are right FD, it would be rewarding to find the original owners. A bit of
thier history they may have thought long gone
Thanks for the comments guys too :-)

Also BBD, i havent seen another reel to reel boombox style such as this one.
Portable yes, in the style of the old cassette recorders, but not like this one.
Would be interesting to see if there are similar !
