With upside down I mean boomboxes that have the tuner on the bottom.
I understand that manufacturers try out different layouts to seperate their products from the competion.
In this case I think the failed.
It just looks strange.

For me the only really good looking upside down boombox is the National / Panasonic RX-7200.
And I think the fact that this one got a digital tuner actually helps the looks here.

RX-5350 is okay I guess but not really a favourite of mine.
Most of the Akai's are meh and the Sencor I think is one of the ugliest classic boomboxes.
Just my taste - no disrespect.

What do you think?
Do you like the upside down design?
If you have some please post pictures and let me know why you like them.

I only have one upside down box, a lower end Akai but I love it. Have been looking out for a better one for ages. I love the quirky design. They are like a chick you find hot despite not being good looking in the conventional sense.

Panasonic and Akai targeted older, conservative buyers who usually left their radios at home on a shelf, instead of carrying them down the street. So the upside-down design makes perfect sense.

But does it make more sense for home use?
I think the reason it looks so wrong to me is that with hifi components I would always put the tuner unit on top.
Only record player goes on top of that but never the tape on top of the tuner.
And every hifi brochure shows the components in a configuration with tuner on top so I guess thats what people are familar with.
I just dont see the benefit other than having a diferent look.
Do you think when its sitting on a shelf they can change the radio station more easily on an upside down boombox?

I totally get your argument, T-STER.
I'm all about variety and if I would I come by a Akai or Sencor for a decent price I would definitly get one.
Maybe the have other qualities beside their looks :p

These upside down boxes are the perfect shoulder-mounted ghetto blaster because the controls are there right in front of your face lol

The Sencor comes with big ass handles on the sides so maybe you're on to something here, Floyd. ;-)

I actually have one upside down box in my collection that I Iove.
Compared to the other Crown boomboxes it definitely looks more mature / hifi than street.

I do think so, yes, especially if that person is sitting.

Despite never owning one, I've always liked the look of the upside down models. I've often imagined one on a higher shelf I'd need to reach up to, sitting high and proud. As for the Sencor in post#6, that is a real beauty to set eyes upon.

I'm fine with them, in general. Of course, it also depends on the model..... no different than normal layout boomboxes. Some I like, and some I don't like. After all, some classics are beautiful, and some are just plain butt ugly.

All right, I can see that. Good point.

There is also a Crown CSC-300 wich looks very nice, too.

I must admit that i do like all upside down boxes from the different brands. Mostly because they are just different and I like different though some are more gentle on the eye than others.

I agree that these homers are not necessarily as street looking as other units but they are certainly beautiful nonetheless, and I wouldn't hesitate in adding to my collection.
