That digital display looks to be a Burroughs Panaplex plasma display. They were used in very early desktop & handheld calculators. They require an internal voltage boost of over 200 volts to fire the plasma gas. A lot of electronics is required just to operate that display.

Really? Hmm, well the display comes on instantly as soon as I plug it into the wall, and there doesn't seem to be a power spike of any kind.

The coolest thing is, it's got a light sensor right above the display, so that it can get dimmer at night.

And by the way, these boxes are found quite often on Ebay Germany.......Probably at least 2 per month.

Very heavy.....21 lbs

13 inches tall, and 6 inches deep

Son of a bitch you mean I didn't pay attention? I didn't have enough time for half the boxes there. :'-(

Yeah, definitely not enough time. But at least we prioritized the biggest & baddest.
Anytime you guys want to do something smaller, I'm game!

You won't see voltage spikes. I've got some 1972 model hand held calculators with similar displays that run off 4 AAs. The screens come on immediately at turn on - a very reliable, long lasting and expensive technology at the time.

Maybe your Universum Senator 8800 doesn't have a Panaplex display, but it would have been cool if it did.
