You know how it is when you have a little bid and you don't expect to win the auction.....

I just won THIS!

What on earth have I gone & done now? :-D

Hah, those are sweet. I'd like to win won eventually for a garage system or something.

The 9000, that's the eBay one, has the oval speakers. From what I can find on the web, the one with 2-way speakers is the 8740.
It seems there are several, slightly differing versions of this odd box.
The seller's feedback looks good so I'm quietly confident that I haven't bought an undeclared mongrel of some sort.

I've got the 8740, it's a lot of fun. You'll like it when you start playing with the speaker configurations. Doesn't kick down any doors with its sound, but it definitely has a unique look.

We had one of these at the last UK meet...it was andytandy's favourite box

Its a weird one alright, not my cup of tea, but for £30 you can't go too far wrong  Just be careful with ebay, it can be tempting to get carried away buying all sorts, then when you start to work out what you like and don't like you tend to be a bit more discriminating. Tho to be fair, not sure how you work out what you like until you get your sticky mits on a box and crank it up. What you need to do really is get to the next UK meet, if one gets arranged, then you'd get to have a play with lots of different boxes and see what you really really want :-D

:eek:fftopic: Its a full deck with two speakers put on top and attached with a handle. Not a boombox!!!!

Joking. Jackpot for you.

I suggest that you add a photo to your post. The ebay link may disappear after some time. Boomboxery will last for ever!!

Well, after some confusion surrounding the shipping arrangements (my fault  ), the Tosh is on its way to me. I'll post something about it once it gets to me.

Well this has to be the quickest to arrive eBay item ever! It just turned up in a TNT truck, packaging was massive and intelligently executed, if anything the device looks far better in the flesh than the somewhat average listing photo suggested it would be and it's working perfectly with those oval speakers sounding pretty decent and doing plenty of bass, very little distortion at high volume and - as I'd expect from a Toshiba tuner - good sensitivity if not quite as good as the best of my 1960s, German multiband radios. That said, it found a couple of the Scandinavian FM stations that we get here in certain atmospheric conditions and it's good on MW and LW too with RTE1 on 252KHz coming in loud and clear from over in Ireland and North Sound from further up the coast in Aberdeen sounding acceptable too.
SW isn't great but hey, it does work and besides, I wasn't buying a comms receiver so it's all good.

The only job I'll need to do on this one is to scoosh a little Servisol S10 into the pots as the treble and both volume ones are slightly scratchy and the pinch roller, although functioning well now, seems a little glazed so may start to slip if I don't replace it soon. I'll do that and check the belt(s?) before I trust it with any of my high quality recordings but yeah, proper bargain all things considered.

And a better(ish) picture of the front view of the thing in its new home:

Just came across this a few minutes ago. Apparently this boombox can flap its speakers and fly across oceans. Not sure how to activate this function.

I'll put it on the bathroom scale and post its weight shortly. Once SWMBO is through the bathroom.

OK, weighed and, because I couldn't quite believe it either, picture attached to show it on the scale:

Yes, that really does weigh that much, 2st 6Lb (or a shade under 15Kg in those strange European units). :jawdrop:

That's only a pound or two less than the Technics!

There's one of these on eBay ATM for £30 'BIN' if anyone's interested? I can't make my mind up on my first box, think I've got my heart set on something else ha ha

Good value if they're sold by the stone! I have mine in bits on the bench just now, a little S10 needed as the treble pot is scratchy and while I'm in there I'm changing an AM IFT that I found was faulty when trying to set up AM alignment better. Built like a brick, erm, "outbuilding" and the tape transport is all steel so no plastic bits snapping off and causing trouble.
Best bit about the thing is the bass. It's rich, yet pretty tight and amazingly tuneful considering there's no thought been given to the enclosures, they're literally just empty boxes with 8x5s inside.
I've just run a PWEI tape through it and I swear it makes Fuzzer's drumming sound good. :-O
