I purchased an M-9990 a year ago that had deck issues. I purchased it even though it had these issues 'cause it was drop dead cosmetically gorgeous. Thought about parting it out, but Super & Bill convinced me to keep at it. Turns out the clutch pads were fried.
Fast forward to a year later. Scotty had an M-9990 on the bay that had seen it's better days. Or so it seems. Looking quite the worse for ware (almost like acid had been splashed on it,) yet Scott insisted all was right mechanically, 'cept for a small volume level difference between right and left sides. Knowing that if Scott said it was so, it damn well was so, I got it for, I think, $35.00-$40.00 wasn't it Scott? Damn fine price for a fully working M-9990. ;-) The clock only works intermittently, but more on that later.
First thing I did was clean the heads and, low & behold, the problem got better, and the sound clearer. Looking under magnification I saw something on one side of the head. Taking my non-destructive tool (a toothpick) I lightly scraped it off and voila', perfect sound.
Last night I decided it was time to go for it. After having cleaned and prepped the case halves from the first box I gently dropped the Board, Tuner, & Deck from the second into the front half of the first case, screwed it all down, and attached the first back case on. After having a DUH! moment and turning off the timer, she fired right up, sweet as all hell! :-D

Gonna have to study a post from last year about fixing the clock before she comes apart again, but that's tomorrow, and I can't wait. Just like I couldn't wait to set up decent pics.

But I had to get this big :thankyou: out to Super, Bill, and especially Scott  without who this all would not have been possible.

Didn't I fix that deck for you? Did you never reinstall it?
You sent me pics of the cloth clutch assembly, I remember that much. Rather detailed ones at that. Got it apart but could never get it back together again, I thought.   At least I don't remember sending it to you. This was about 6 months after I got the M-9998 back that you repaired for me. I have a sanyo deck motor from one of our esteemed OZ members waiting to go into that one, like you said I would need.
To tell the truth, that deck motor and M-9990 deck are in the same box somewhere. You probably already guessed that I'm cleaning my work space/storage space right now, 'cause I've gotten three projects back together in the last two days.

If you did fix it for me Norm, I 'll have another one put together by this time next week, I hope. Still have to find it now...  Let me thank you now before I forget. I wouldn't be able to do any of this without your help, nor would I even have the courage to attempt it! :thankyou:

Sigh. You must've forgot already. You mailed the deck to me, I fixed it including the clutch. I mailed it back you. All you needed to do was put in a new main drive belt as I was out of the sbl5.4" belts. I never heard from you after that. I presume you got the deck back if its in your possession?

Yes I do. It's in my possession.

All I can say in my defense is that my workshop is operating under "New Management." The owner is a little more clear headed lately as opposed to being half in the bag working on gear half the time. ;-) :drunk: :dunce: :weed:

No problem, I hope you do put the other one back together too. Otherwise, never mind the work, the shipping costs to ship to me, and then for me to ship to you would've been wasted. Anyhow, if you can't ever put it back together again or if it don't work and you decide to part it..... dibs on the tuner!

OK, I found the deck. Of course, the clutches are all new and appear to be tip-top. :-D I'm gonna try and put it back together from memory because I'm not going to take the other apart if I don't have to. It looks just like you said. It just needs the flywheel (found that) and belts. Once the deck gets back together re-installing it from memory shouldn't be a problem (I hope.)
If it is too much, yes, the tuner is yours. ;-)
Hope I have all the parts for the deck here.
Thank you again, Norm, for your kindness & generosity, not to mention your seemingly unending well of patience with an idiot such as myself. I'm not giving up yet. :nonono:

Reviewing the pics before deleting them from the camera, I thought I noticed something . Upon examination of the pics above, I notice a small smudge on the outer shell next to the left side of the tape door. It seems to have had the clear coat or topcoat of paint dulled for some reason. Maybe it will polish out? :hmmm: Any suggestions? Not that I want to sell it. I just want it perfect. ;-) Seems nothing can hide from a camera flash.

I do see the smudge by the cassette door..... Maybe just take some polishing compound on a rag and rub it out :D

That's the one, Lew. That's gonna happen quick, if I have anything to do with it! :-D

Thanks so much for that post! ;-)
No problem at all, Kenpat. Whenever I learn something new "Boomboxery," I like to share it here right away so other members can keep their relics booming. :-)
In the next few days I'll be sharing a line-in mod for the 9990 that's so simple it will Melt. Your. Face. No switches, no cutting, no drilling, completely reversible, and completely undetectable.
If you have 15 minutes, a screwdriver, and a soldering iron, your 9990's will be spending a lot less time on the shelf. ;-)
