So I was offered a trade of a sharp gf909 for my j1 super jumbo here are the details
My j1 works 1 deck needs belts it's sluggish other deck is good to go works great
1 foot is a bit ****ed up on the rear cabinet but not bad
Lights and clock fully work not missing any sliders or knobs
All functions work
Cosmetically is decent

Gf 909 decks both need belts
Missing both speaker covers
Cosmetically it's pretty decent no missing buttons or knobs

I like both radios for various reasons j1 sheer size and look

909 looks amazing also and sounds great

I only buy or trade for what I can touch which cancels out eBay I don't trust it I see to many nightmareish packaging jobs

J1 is rare in my parts
Gf909 I've never seen one I can touch literally ever

**** this is difficult I want both but this 909 is trade only the owner wants a j1

Boomboxery what would you do ?

Tricky one. I’d say the 909 was rarer than the J1. I have a J1, a 767 and a 777, but no 909. Personally I’d keep the J1 as I love mine, think it’s the mutts nuts. The 909 is the better box tho. I can see why you’re undecided!

For such a big box I always thought the VU’ needles were so skinny. The window is so small it used to drive me insane and I ended up selling my 777. I’ve got a GF-1000 now which has a bolder VU display. If the trade was for a 999 /1000 then I would do it.
However the black drivers on the 909 are a little different and depending on where you live the J1 might be easier to replace down the line as there are lots of these around and plenty of aka’s.

I'd stick with the J1.

The 909 is a nice looking box for sure, but unless you can't read/understand japanese it'll drive you nuts (well at least that's what it did to me!)

I owned a 999, 919 and 909. Ended up selling all of them because of the japanese lettering. Sure thing i know how to operate these boxes and the japanese lettering looks quite unique, but since i did not used to operate them daily it was just not my kind of thing.

There is no way you can just buy the 909 out right?

Hands down the 909 is a better radio in terms of build quality, deck performance and features. The J1 is a late to the game street blaster with tons of flash. It's no slouch in terms of power and volume, but the 909 is going to be a loud beast as well.

Rebelting the 909 is no big deal, there are manuals available for the 777 which is the same.

Really, if you can't have both, it comes down to personal preference. Trade for the 909 and then go get another, less rare J1

I really want both that's the thing but trader will not sell I have asked several times he is holding out for a j1/rexcel/helix one of those super jumbos with flash as for a 909 being local guys I know who have collected far longer than me have never seen one themselves it's such a stupid hard decision if I did this trade tho cost wise it's in my favour
I feel if trader took money it's going to be atleast 1000$ Canadian which is just under eBay value with shipping included

It's tough because they are both awesome, in different ways. I've not heard a J1, but from what I have been told...I would rather have the J1.

Also, I think the risk of you regretting the trade might be higher than the risk of a box getting damaged during shipping....especially if you provide packing instructions in advance.

Flip a coin then live with outcome. I've seen million dollar decisions made in seconds with way less fanfare .

If this were a fairly local trade, I would say go for it. The GF-909 has the quality and the rarity. Speaker grilles can be purchased on ebay and belts are no problem to fix. However, if both boxes have to be shipped, I would hold on to the J1. Both boomboxes are large, and even when packed correctly, they can sustain damage. Then one, or both, of you guys will be disappointed and regret the trade.

The trade is a simple subway ride both parties get to check things out maybe what I should do is go bring my j1 look at both side by side and make my decision with both radios present

As for speaker covers il just have to wait until they pop up on eBay

That sounds like a great plan, especially if you are that close to each other.

By the way, if the other person is not a member here, mention Boomboxery. He might enjoy it here and perhaps learn more about boomboxes.
