Toshiba WX-1 Tape Music Search - How Does It Work?

I have 2 of these units. One is missing the speaker cabinets but the other is complete & I modded the speakers to a wicked 3-way speaker system. The only problem is I can't figure out how the music search works. I figured it was straight forward. Set the number & then press either FF or RW while the tape is playing but the FF or RR will not stay engaged while the tape is playing. Is there some setting I am missing because both units do the same thing so I assume I'm doing something wrong or missing an obvious step to search songs.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Tried that. RR & FF doesn't stay engaged when I try that. I'm wondering if it works differently because when I tried that on both machines, the RR or FF would release & continue playing the tape...maybe bad luck that both don't work even tho the digital counter works correctly...

You might find what you need if you can locate the operator's manual to other Tosh boxes with MQJS, it was used on a bunch of models.

Yeah, been trying to find an owner's manual but I did find a service manual but no mention of Music Search system or how it works. I know other models have it but usually you have to engage search keys as well as RR or FF but no such mech on the deck 'B' for the WX-1...

If it's anything like systems I've seen, you should be able to just increase the number in the red, digital display, and then press either the FF or RWD button. The player will then skip that number of songs. For example, if you are listening to track one on a cassette and you want to skip ahead to track four, push the appropriate button to until you see a red "2" - press FF and the player should skip two songs (#2 & #3) and stop to play track four. Sometimes it might mean that the music skip stops on the the 2nd break, which in this example would play track three.

Experiment with it to see how it works exactly.

Yeah, that's what I thought but the solenoid won't engage to hold the FF or RR in place until the song is cued. It just pops back out as soon as you let go of the button. I just reached out to see if anyone knew of something I'm missing. Oh well, just strange that both units are fully working but have the same search fault. Weird.

Crazy question, but do you also have Tape A or Tape B selected when trying?

I have 'Tape A' selected in the function section(selector buttons) & Tape B monitor 'ON' & Tape B Monitor slider at the 'Middle' setting. I do not see any dubbing setting but I bet I'm missing something.

Maybe the head output has fallen due to wear & isn't getting enough to read the fast moving tape.....it sounds also that initialising of the search mode isn't complete, could be the solenoid but unlikely leaving a mechanical issue somewhere on the deck.....
