As many of you know the Toshiba RT S84 is the Super AKA. There is a thread that shows literally 20 plus versions of this radio with equally as many manufacturers.
In my personal opinion, the Toshiba (hopefully) would be the top of the food chain in this collection.
But, if any of you guys own one of these radios, you know they are just mediocre on the sound side.
What I found after opening it up is this model uses Piezo Tweeters
The stock sound is round, brown and hollow.
The thing is, I like the radio. It's not a Jumbo, it's a little longer than an M70 do to the dual decks. It is a nice size though. Uses 9 D Cells, has an aux in and a classic clean design!
SO, there was only one thing to do....TWEETER MOD!
I had a set of Lasonic TRC 931 tweeters laying around. What other choise did I have?
Once opened, this thing needed a full cleaning! Grills off, tweeter covers off, scrub in the tub cleaning!
The front of the case already had markings for a tweeter this size. All I had to do was take a jig saw and cut the hole open behind tweeter grills. The interesting thing about the tweeter grills is they are louvers with holes the size of the new tweeter with black felt over the holes. From the front, there is literally no appearance difference!
Here I was checking to see if I could point the louvers UP to get more volume....They would need modification, I left them stock.
NICE AND CLEAN!
Here are the tweeters mounted....
Here she is with the tweeter grills back in place! A piece of me thought about pulling the felt from the tweeter to hopefully see the beautiful Orange Lasonic Tweeters with chrome centers But I stuck with the stealth look :sin:
In the end, was there a sound quality difference?
You bet your :dots: There Is ! ! !
Right off the bat the treble knob has lots of throttle left in it. Before it was full treble all the time (think 777)
There is PLENTY of volume when the knob is set at 5 and there is really good definition and separation.
The woofers move, but they are 5.5" and don't move as much air as you would hope
But it's great for Rockin'. I think this is going to be a great carry around box! Finally get to use my Blu Fuz strap!
While I was in there I modded it for Blu Tooth so now it's just Pull it off the Shelf, Plug and Play!
