Hello, today courier brought me an interesting package.

IMG_3021.JPG

Inside was a Toshiba RT-170s and Sony CFS-45L and they came here as a gift by fellow member and probably the best member in this Boomboxery forum and community- MyOhMy. Many more thanks to you !

As they both need some TLC and "Boombox Care", i decided to take apart Toshiba first.

It has some marks and scuffs on and back case looks discoloured, but they don´t bother me alot as they are quite minor and due to extensive use.

IMG_3025.JPG

So i get up all my cleaning chemicals and items

IMG_3026.JPG

It looked kinda dirty inside and very dusty, bottom of case had some stains of some kind of brown mush, i don´t think it´s battery acid, but maybe it was.

IMG_3027.JPG

Some kind of goo in the bottom of the case.
IMG_3032.JPG

Deck wasn´t quite clean though.
IMG_3029.JPG

Small surface rust here and there too.
IMG_3030.JPG

Cleaned up the front case, now it looks fresh. :-D
IMG_3033.JPG

Speakers were dirty and dusty as hell

IMG_3031.JPG

That´s the deck with multi-direction drive and head and with 2 capstans and pinch rollers. Was very dirty, belts had turned to goo (and all Toshibas i´ve worked on have belt goo)
IMG_3035.JPG

This is the multi directional head, is turn mechanically each time when you switch the Play mode, is driven by main belt and cogwheels. Interesting and very clever one
IMG_3037.JPG

This is the deck with cover plate, runs on 1 belt and 1 motor and with 2 capstan flywheels.
IMG_3043.JPG

Rust has taken place there.
IMG_3046.JPG

That´s actually one serious looking tweeter here, not those flat thingys.
IMG_3047.JPG

Work in progress
IMG_3048.JPG

Another look at multi-directional head, in comparison cleaned (right) and not cleaner (left) pinch rollers. After taking this photo i cleaner also the sides of pinch rollers. Now they look as good as new. And cassette deck apartment looks also very fresh.
IMG_3049.JPG

Cassette door has some issues. It appears that all cogwheel teeth on cassette door have been eaten, half of it is just gone.
IMG_3051.JPG

And here you have it !A fully working Toshiba RT-120s that plays both ways and sounds flawless !  :hooray: :stereo: :breakdance:

Coming next: Sony CFS-45L

Nice work, crazygamer, nice work indeed!

I'm pleased it's gone well. Regarding the tape deck door: how well does it operate with the worn cogs? If it doesn't spring open like it ought to, could you increase the tension on the spring clips/levers on the door: bend if metal or use a dab of contact adhesive on a small spring inserted behind the spring clip/lever if it's plastic? :hmmm:

Oh yes it went quite alright this time. With worn cogs, it just pops out with a sound that somethings grinding very badly and pops out very quick, no soft eject. I guess i have to remove the spring and cogwheels as that "not-so-soft-eject" might break cassette door. I guess it wont help a lot as it´s curved and it´ll still slide over the main cog wheel as power by loaded spring pops it open very easily. Removing the spring should do, although it´s not the same as it was. :-/

I appreciate Toshiba boxes may have different sizes and faces to the deck doors but, if you can identify another Toshiba door with the identical cog detail, could a doner part be cut from another door and transplanted? Are there any AKA's?

Is the cog wheel loose or could the door not be sitting correctly? Perhaps, over the years, the door has been pressed closed from the opposite side to the cog & wheel placing uneven pressure on the plastic cog mechanism?.

As long as the cogs on your Toshiba door are the same as a doner door cog then a transplant could be possible with care and skill.

* Out of interest, this door is from a Sharp QT-250 taken from a similar angle:

I've checked my other Sharp models: GF-9000, QT-37, QT-90 & GF-A2 and all of these boxes have different cog & wheel arrangements.

Is the cog wheel able to move freely or does it have a tendency to stiffen?

Cogwheel doesn´t move freely, and i guess that´s why cogs on cassette door look so tired, as cogwheel moves unevenly. I took out that all grease that makes cogwheel move smoothly,it has hardened over times though. When you open the door, it just pops open and slides over that cogwheel as cogwheel barely moves. No transplant is possible and no AKAs in my knowledge. I can handle it just like it is, it´s a minor problem. But i have to press the spring together so it wont pop open this tough, it might break something this way.

OK, I understand. I think the best thing for now would be to get the rotary cog freed up.

I got it freed up, but as it doesn´t make any contact with cassette door cogs, it won´t change the matters at all. I guess i just have to soften up the spring so it won´t pop the door open at full shot, it might damage something and it kinda kicks out very bad. No problem with that, these things once just get like this.

Great restoration job. You might want to try jb weld on door gear to resurface it 😉

Yes, that´s an idea too, although i don´t know if it works out, we don´t have JB Weld for sale over here though. There must be some way for sure.
