Hi all, as posted in the general chat forum I acquired this little BomBeat mini yesterday for $2 NZ and it's in really good shape. Antennas are not broken, no knobs missing, casing not scratched. I don't have an external power supply for it (9V) so I'll be running it off C cells for now.

The cassette deck doesn't go, so that's my first point of investigation. Prepare to see a mini BomBeat get naked !

The tape mech is very compact but pretty straight forward to work on with 2 main square belts (which are both total goo). Easy to get into this thing too - five screws in the back and the fascia comes off. Two multiplugs and it comes away completely. Three screws for the tape mech followed by two connectors and it's out. Took about five minutes :-)

I couldn't find any belt lengths listed anywhere for the RT-S653 but I did find belts listed on turntableneedles.com for the RT-S651 so I'm going to go with those and hope it's a similar mechanism.

The 651 looks visually very similar so I think I should be ok with basing my belt sizes off it -

It's almost done. Just rebelted the deck and picked up some C cells (can't find a suitable power adaptor) so reassembly should be finished tonight. I'll post up some more pics once tested and cleaned :-)

The deck on this mini seems more akin to a personal cassette player than ones I've worked on previously. I suppose that's not surprising given the need for a lightweight, small and power efficient transport.
