this thing goes nice with my truck !! :-)
and since it will no longer be the salt water box :nonono:
maybe its the tailgate blaster :w00t:

MVC-0009-22.jpg

ok --this has to be my favorite shot -
the 40 is 'unplugged' --on 10 D cells --
has the full range dial lamps -- ON
and with NO TOOTHPICK !!!! :w00t:
( thanks to :super: )

comparing ANY 1 piece box to the mighty m90 --
is never a big success :-O :-)

there is 'something' about the case design of the m90 --that makes its sound
very personal and involving -- NO other box does exactly that :-D :-D
right ???

the bass is bigger -- the mids are clearer and the highs are superb --
so --imho --m90 is always da man

MVC-0015jpgg.jpg

redbenjoe

I Am Legend
as mono was hip to post the other day --
both the s90 and the bb40 share the identical case back :hmmm: :hmmm:

other than that -
2 very different animals --

the s90 is a total delight to hear -- :angelic: :angelic:
VERY deep bass and magnificent brilliant highs-

its so smooooooooooooth --close to good home stereo :-) :-D
its an easy 24/7 listener --
BUT ONLY up to medium volumes -
the case rattles on loud deep bass --
like it was never built to be played LOUD !!
so --its a tad fragile for an outdoor party box

It's too bad this box is so rare, Ira. Cuz, I'm thinking if it was more common, some creative upgrades, more powerful PSU, and better drivers would change all that, for good.

redbenjoe

I Am Legend
compared to the s90 -- the bb40 is much more of a GHETTOBLASTER -

the bass is not as deep --but it hits loud and hard
and the mids & highs do not have the fine details of the s90 -
but it POUNDS :w00t:

you can ' almost // sorta ' see all that in the 2 above pictures :-) :-)

the s90 looks = inside
the 40 looks = outside

--so - feeling very lucky to have both

Beauty and the beast. S90 looks all class. BB40 oozes brawn.

Man, you don't know how badly I wanted the BomBeat 40 to be the M90 killer. :-/

Many thanks for the comparisons!

redbenjoe

I Am Legend
right --about the beauty and the beast bit :-D

toshiba may have been selling both of these models at the same time -
and for 2 different market purposes

That's a possibility. I personally believe that the BomBeat 40 was never sold in Japan 'cause I've never seen one for auction on Yahoo Japan. If my analysis is correct and they've never seen one, it would be interesting to know what boombox collectors/sellers in Japan think about the BomBeat 40. I can see your box fetching more than that new-in-box S90 from months past if it was posted there.

That wouldn't really be a fair pow wow since the Bombeat 40 has 2 amps, approx M9994 power level and the M90 has 4 amps in dual bridged config, with each channel getting about 50% more power than the Sanyo or other comparable amps.

I suspect, that the bombeat 40 was a very short model run.

mono --sometimes --just 'rare' does not make a box worth big $$-

i think its more important for the model to be world famous --
like the m90 or conion c100f or the 'madona' style discolites

Witness the "used, not all working" M90 with some bits of documentation and other useless paper selling for 2 grand.

:agree: :agree: :-) :-D

and --the 'famous' S90 --may only be known because of our own site posts - :hmmm:

like i never would have even heard of an s90 --if an old s2g member named NED -
has not made a convincing praise post all about its lovely sound :-) :-)

GREAT reports Ira!!
Love it all!

I love your BomBeat 40 to S-90 comparison. I've been trying to separate
the sounds and designations of boombox, ghettoblaster and portable stereo over the last
few weeks myself as I do sincerely believe they are all different animals.

BomBeat 40 is still at the top of my list though, M90 killer or not.
It's a serious work of art... I simply don't understand why they're so rare..

Norm's theory of the short run may unfortunately for a lot of us be true.

Ahh well, more reason to plan a trip to Florida to experience one in person!!

Rock On.

Well from my perspective I would like to make a comment here:

No one among us I believe is more deserving of this beautiful machine than our own Ira.
He has always been there to help others with anything he could.
He is the most prolific poster here and was on his way to the top at S2G
This box has found its Soulmate.

I hope Joanne is OK with you cuddling up with that big Tosh everynight, its the threesome of your dreams.

Thanks for the comparison, Ira. I can't wait to see the improved BomBeat 40. I find it interesting how two boomboxes made by the same, and the same size, can look so different from each other.

No disrespect intended, but Redbenjoe, you need a new camera. :-P  :-D

Those pictures you took should've been stunners and savers. :-/

Doesn't mean that I won't save 'em, but even you've gotta admit that they're FAR from stunning for such deserving boxes! :-D
