Top panel for Panasonic RX-FD80L - restore? replace?

So I picked up recently a Panasonic RX-FD80L; it was absolutely filthy but couldn't say no given that it's one of the less common boxes and also I have a thing for these early CD boomboxes which still have the flashy mid-80s styling (would love to acquire a Sony CFD-5 to go with it, but I think I might be waiting a while to find one of those...) Having the speakers raked upwards really does seem to improve the sound, especially when it's placed at waist height or below. Don't know why more boomboxes weren't designed like this.

Anyway I've managed to clean it up quite nicely but the one thing I can't do anything about easily is the top panel. It looks like this has been stored in less than optimal conditions in the past and rust has bubbled up through it (I suppose it's some kind of metallic chromed finish on top of plastic.) Not sure what to do about this, I could try sandpapering it down in the affected spots but presumably that will lose the design / lettering underneath? And getting a replacement top panel seems like it would be a challenge given that it's a hard box to locate to begin with. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

It's the aluminum rusting. Nothing you can do to fix it. You'd have to buy another one to get a good panel, so just enjoy it!

This is multi layered coating i had one back in the day and the same happened it's just bad scratching, caution is correct as usual though there is nothing you can do, only thing i can suggest is to sand the panel down with 3000 grit to take the top layers off and to make the coating even...

i also have the whole front casing, cd door cassette door but i need to see what condition it is in, IF the casing is good it's yours for £150 all in but i need to see the condition first and find it cheers....this offer is only open to you if you are in the uk

Yeah, fair enough :) I've stuck it at the top of all my other boxes so I can't see the top face of it unless I'm on tip-toe; out of sight, out of mind :) Also the photo shows how far the front is raked backwards compared to the JVC PC-W35 underneath it.

But the sandpaper would take the lettering off as well, I assume? I'm not sure how this multi-layered stuff works; is the actual lettering on the top level or underneath?

Thanks for the offer; actually I am in the UK but the front of mine is fine (except for one small mark); I guess the way the previous owner stored it must've restricted the damage to the top only. So it's probably overkill to buy all that just to fix the top part only.

Not to worry mine is not mint anyway it's about 75% better than yours as it has just been kept as parts as i bought 2 of these to make one working unit.....as for sanding the panel yes i suspect it would remove the lettering buddy
