It looks like many of you have already found your $$$ grails and some you have some stories of amazing and unllikely scores. I am just starting out and trying to be realistic in obtaining some boxes so I was wondering if some of you would share your top 5 boomboxes that are generally available for less than a hundred bucks (or even $50 if possible.). Looking for good performance/appearance bang for the buck. Maybe even a little background on why you would want these boxes. I would like to stick with the traditional one piece designs and I know this is very subjective since some of your wants may be due to nostalgia but that is ok. Thanks for sharing. This might be a good starting point for me.

Top 5 (cheaper) boxes. These all come up on ebay.de all the time.

Crown 850 - Solid construction, big big big sound, looks good on your shoulder with a strap.

Sharp GF9191 - Nice allrounder

Universum Super Sound 16000 - Very underdiscovered and underrated box. Can be picked up for peanuts.

JVC M70 - Have never heard one, but you can't deny the hype. Not always findable for that price but have seen a few go for under 100 euros.

SANYO M 4500KE - Nice way to get into the Sanyo scene. Appear regularly for next to nothing.

Like I said, these are generally what you can pick up over here in Germany. If you're lucky, they may even ship abroad.

Good luck in your quest!!

In the US it is alot harder to come by bbx's for under $100 in nice working condition, and $50 unless you get lucky as some members have. I would have to say that some Panny boxes like RX5050,5085, 5150, are some prime examples for under a hundred.. Then you have your realistic scr6 and scr8 which are nice all around looking and sounding units :-D I enjoy my CEC, Soundmaster, Randix which are mid size awsome boxes in my opinion  So 5 great top boxes i have are:
Realistic SCR8
CEC OL-7540
Panny RX5150
Sharp GF9191x
Hitachi TRK8080MMII
These are all usually under $100 :-D

It has to be said that an M70 generally costs a lot more than 100 and would only be that much if you get lucky or its beat up.

For me it would be something like an Hitachi 8080 or 8180 or a Sharp 9090/9191.
There are probably too many others to mention.

i'm not saying what i get my boxes for as i don't like to see grown men cry

but on a serious note - under 100 bucks ? well over here in the UK you might find some of these and i have picked what i think will not dissapoint and may not be the first one's you think of

Panasonic RX-DT680 - is a great contender = it does have the looks of old school but it has one of the best creamy bass that you will hear

Hitachi TRK 3D80 - love the looks of the four speakers on the front and you can pick them up cheap

Sanyo M7900 - a little machine that not only looks fantastic but has a great sound as well

Phillips (Magnavox) D8443 - not the best for sound if compared with big stuff but has a good look and will impress other that don't know much about boxes

Sharp QT 88 - nice clean looking box that you can't go wrong with - they would of had one of these on the Death star

cheers B :breakdance:

I always think the best idea for anyone just starting out is to browse the collections page on here for a few hours a night and work out exactly what it is you like and then work out which models you really want in your collection from there.

The idea is to decide what you like the most about them. Whether it's the looks, sound, size, colour, whatever. We all have slightly differing tastes and although there are the stalwart classic models, they might not be to your taste, or more to the point, to your budget.

Make a list of your favourite makes and models, save as many photos of them as you can and then go from there. I know this takes time, but it's a worthwhile investment in it before you plonk down your moolah for something.

Just my opinion of course, but I found it's the only way I could decide where my passions lay with this awesome hobby.

Rock On.
