I've recently purchased a Magnavox d8443. I was definitely drawn in by the appearance of this ghetto. The tapedeck in the upper left corner, three speakers that scream originality in a box. I understand for sound quality it isn't the best but design wise, I was sold. What else is pure design gold? What 10....How bout 20 boxes do I need to See? Yeah I'm talking to you....100 ghettoblaster having soundnerd! Bring on the pics and the opinion, but let's see the gems! i want to hear about sound quality too? Aux ins, Phono Ins, Full blown record player! Thanks guys, and have fun with this!!

Just got a D8443 as well and for the same reasons. I'm looking forward to reading the replies as I'm a quite new collector and could use some professional advice ;-)

Your individual tastes will determine what your top 10 is. I would say all my boxes are my favorite on a given day. I would suggest looking at and listening to as many as you can and then decide what you want to add to your collection. I am happy to offer up some of my personal faves...

JVC RC-M90, JVC RC-M70 (personal fave), Sanyo M9994 and my current favorite to listen to (this week... :-D ) the Sony FH-207. Good luck with your search as it will be a really fun journey.... :-D

Not to pee on anybodys carpet, but you have to go for what you like.
Chasing only the biggest or loudest or somebody else's favorite top 5, 10 or 100 is OK, but when I started in 2003 (quite by accident) my first box was a mini from eBay and I bought it cause it was a Sansui and it was red. Nobody even knew about the FX700's back then...... and I still have it.

It is one of MY top 10.

Also a TPR-920. Not Big But Classic Looker and Quality box. So are these going to be on your lists????

I highly suspect not ever, but thats OK

Besides if all you want is the biggest and the most talked about, fine but you will miss the great thousands, (The BB Database has several thousand listings) of other possibilities.

Be individualistic. Spend an hour browsing all the picture sites avail today, ebay, get THE BOOK, and decide what you like.

For me the Maggy is OK, but I've always thought it was all hat and no cattle.

JUST UEIMHO

As a devotee of Uncle Ed's teachings over the years I thoroughly support this idea.

When I first started, and didn't know what the hell I was doing, what I was looking for, or even what I liked. I spent many, many hours in silent study of nearly every thread of interest on stereo2go. I discovered what I loved the most and gave my passion a DIRECTION. Without a focus for what you want you'll end up with a lot of radios that you don't love and wonder why you even have them.

Do the time, do the research on here and s2go and nature will take it's course.

Best of luck, be patient, and I hope you find this hobby as rewarding as I do.

Rock On.

I couldn't agree more Ed and when Ira tried to slash me with a wet noodle for picking up a minty Sanyo M9975 that's pretty much how I defended myself against his tyrannical rage for buying a non-grail box.

...I found it invaluable to be able to listen to dozens of boxes before buying them, it helped me in finding out what kind of collector I would be. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site. When you see boomer that you like feel free to ask questions...that is what I do... :-D ...cause I am still a rookie....

Of course everyone has a very different opinion on his favorite boxes. That's how it should be, too.
But this topic is not about finding out which boxes are most popular, anyway. It's about individual reasons why ceratin boxes are great. Be it because a box is huge and menacing or cause it's rather small with great sound quality and many features. Plus, while I have my individual opinion on style as a newbie I have no idea about sound quality simply because I usually have no chance to check it before I buy a box. So it's good to know that the Crown SZ-5100 probably would not be mentioned here for best sound quality while the GF 777 kind of lives up to its hype.

I agree with the guys, you need to just look and read up about all the boxes of yesteryears. What might be the all time favorite of mine may not be yours or anybody else's :-D I own a $10 small lenox sound(nothing fancy) but I love to listen to it. Both the radio and deck work and it sounds better than some of my bigger more expensive bbx's  It takes only 6 d cell batteries and they last forever ;-)
Sometimes when you get a box you may not be as happy as you thought so you can try and trade or sell for something else :-) That is the fun part about being a collector, you are in charge   This is the pic of my lenox sound :-D

there were all very inexpensive and most have worked & sounded much better than
expected -

my faves change all the time. i guess its all what you are into and personal preferences.

i love this viking box but its not the loudest best sounding. it does sound very very good but the quality is not the same as some of the better made boxes.
i like it so much i am having a hard time not picking up another like it right now
IMG_6490.jpg

i also love this sears box.
again not super expensive but wow what a nice radio i mean it looks excellent is a battery miser and has extremely good sound.
i have two of them and i use them a fair bit.
i mean i often toss those two in the back of the car when i go to the drive in.
IMG_6487.jpg

next up is this box
its missng a lot of things i usually like. no chrome rings no analog tuner but the primitive digital tuner is cool and as for sound its ok not super but it can get loud and does sound nice
IMG_6492.jpg

also in the loved category is the sanyo c7
its another of the boxes i have come across with almost zero use on it. i mean its mint like i just bought it last week kind of mint.
great sound and well just a very nice looking piece of gear
IMG_6496.jpg

jvc m70
how could i pass this one by. i mean mine is not perfect a tiny sliver out of the case up top missing top chrome piece but this radio
sounds excellent.
just a killer box with great looks classic.
IMG_6495.jpg

yup a egg these were no cheap boxes tho back in the day they were about as costly as you could get.
amazing sound really good tape decks with full remote.
you might hate how they look but before the market was flooded with crappy egg shaped boomboxes this beast was just amazing.
one of the best radios i have and just killer sound music on this radio sounds dynamic and full
IMG_6498.jpg

of course big round tube kaboom
this most likely is the last huge heavy portable with massive sound. sure its got its short comings but they do sound excellent and really the kaboom is pretty versitile.
IMG_6329.jpg

well m9998k
the big brother to my little sears boxes
great sound great radio
looks some hate it but i think most people who have owned one know this is a box that you dont give up there is no way anyone is going to make something this good ever again
P1020478.jpg

pc550
always bet on black
stereo just sounds so good. has that density home stereo dynamic to its sound.
yup its a three piece and just really amazing

P1020112.jpg

sk-95 just a beautiful unit put together really nicely.
nice chrome bits and a really excellent tape deck tuner indicator lights are fantastic as well.
metal knobs and just really a nice radio
IMG_5885.jpg

i guess i have to stop now but honestly there are a couple more i need to mention

sony fh215r just jaw dropping when you hear one
getting two for ten bucks was pretty nice
i do think of this boombox as more of a home stereo than a portable radio. while there was a battery pack you could get for them i cannot see anyone wielding this box about for very long
seriously massive in sound
IMG_6007.jpg

and of course
its smaller better constructed more refined sounding sibling
IMG_6011.jpg

all of my boxes are in the wild finds .
there is a lot of other boomboxes i have that are really great as well. i mean i didnt even touch on any of the minis i have, and yes i do think some of the minis are amazing.

i mean i king of had all my boxes find me while i would love to find a m90 or a conion c100 i feel very blessed and lucky to have the boxes i do have.

i never in a million years thought my collection would have been as good as it is when i first started.

P1020564.jpg

P1020189.jpg

P1030283.jpg

it just goes on and on really

i also learned very quicky to be my own judge of what i like and do not like.
i nearly passed on several boxes because others had said they did not like the way they sounded.
i am glad i did not and just picked up what i liked.
i mean like rick says you can end up with a lot of radios you wonder why you have. i managed to avoid too much of that.

Just to simplify your lives a little bit now that your heads are swimming in a vertigo of dizziness....

Here is a simple unbreakable hard and fast rule that applies 100% of the time:

If Ira (redbenjoe) likes it, get it.

Cool Pics Guys!, I'm lovin' it! I'll be Honest, I collect a lot of Stuff, so when I decided I was going to track one down I wanted something significant looking. I don't plan to collect multiple boxes but was just surprised when I googled top 10 ghetto blasters their were no lists. I guess I didn't realize the sheer # of ghetto's produced over the years and true enough, peoples different opinions. BILL: Nice, I especially like your jvc m70, and that white box(the jvc) with the dual volume sliders is real nice.

Your Sears Viking Box looks Classic and reminds me of a character I recently created. Check this guy out!

I've always loved the Classic Boombox and Created this Characters head out of a Fictitious Stereo. Now that I'm getting to know a little more about them I'm thinking it would have been cool to base him off of an actual Ghetto. Check out this website to see a 4 page story if your interested.

http://wallfarmers.ca/featured_artist/b ... macdonald/

It would be neat for Ghetto blaster aficionados to be able to recognize and date his head(Blaster).

Keep them pics coming!
