Hi

So older boomboxes have bass and treble knobs. Newer have one tone knob.
Which one do you think is better?

So far I had only boxes with bass and treble pots. I am kind of wary of the tone option. Should I be?
What is that tone thing about anyway, is it like continuous loudness potentiometer?

Separate controls are better because you have greater control of the final sound. The tone control is certainly better than nothing but you end up with either a brighter sound on the H side or a more muffled sound on the L end. In other words, you can choose to have either bass or treble. There is no way to have both stronger bass and more treble at the same time.

Rather than older and newer the differences tend to be on high end and low end boomboxes. Some low end boxes are tone only but on high end boxes there will almost always be a bass and treble control or at least an equaliser of some sort.

Obviously the more controls the better to adjust your music.

Yep, tone boxes are usually low-end ones with weak amps, so even if they had separate bass and treble, the amp would be too weak to allow full bass and treble above say 20% volume.

Then you have boxes like the Sanyo M-X720 that doesn't have either option - not even a Loudness option. Of course, it still sounds like smooth, velvety butter.
