I only open up a box if it is having a problem requiring repair---
I know from reading various postings that many seem to open their newly acquired boxes as a matter of course when received....to inspect or clean the interior?
I worry about accidental damage creating problems by opening a box that is working well---sort of a do-no-harm concept. Don't get me wrong I'll open things up if there is a problem--but if everything is working properly when I bring a box home--I sort of leave well enough alone...?
Do you think i am out of line with this process?

Definitely not out of line. In reality, it is best in a lot of instances to leave well enough alone. A good cleaning of the exterior is just fine for many situations.

This is especially true if you are not tech inclined or knowledgeable. I've seen a lot of folks take something apart, who in the name of improvement, create issues that didn't exist.

Personally for me I like to get in there as it is important to me to check stuff out. But I also inherited that from my Dad who repaired electronics for over 45 years.

I'm afraid I still have to open it even if it's fully working as I need them the be squeaky clean inside and out :)

I for sure can understand this--in fact the issue of detail cleaning the interior is what caused me to raise this question----
I sort of stare knowing there is junk inside there that needs to be cleaned but--?

Do not open. Leave the locked screws as it is (you only get the graceful 'click' once while unscrewing an untouched box).

Yeh I hate looking at a box knowing there's 30 years of grime, fluff, dead bugs, skin cells, and grease lurking inside there...gotta get it clean :-)

I lost count of the number of times I regretted opening up a box. One thing leads to another and next thing you know, you are refurbing the whole dang box. And sometimes, it don't go together just right and you got to keep opening, closing opening closing and opening then closing just to get it right again.

Oh, and some boomboxes are never right again after you unbutton it. Such as the M9998. Disassembly and reassembly with all the wire looms back in the proper spot and closeable is an art all unto itself and almost impossible to perfect. Needs a phone book sized reassembly manual for this box.

Oh and heaven forbid it was all working and you tinkered with it and broke something. (check Royce and his 5350 meters and the heartbreak when that happens). Or it WAS all working until you touched it, then it be working no more. Now what?

The only time I open a fully working radio is if it is so dirty and covered in or fill of dust OR might have bugs in it. I don't want to bring a radio into my house from a hoarders house that is full of cockroaches.

A radio full of dist bunnies could also be a fire hazard.

But if you don't have to open it, leave it closed, less creaks and less rattles that way

You summed up my overall thoughts and reasoning perfectly here---
I'm glad I brought this subject up and that it appears as if there are others who share my "Leave well enough alone" sentiments dependent of course on the operational quality of the box----
Lasonic does bring up a good point regarding fire hazard and bring critters into the house hold however---I admit I never thought in that direction before but i will now---
