Last weekend my band CESSATION OF LIFE headed for Phoenix, Arizona to hook up with our friends in the band SOULFLY. We weren't performing, so it gave us a chance to just hang out and party.
It true Boomboxery fashion, I had to bring a radio with me. I looked through the collection and since the GF-777z went to Ozzfest AND I was limited on truck space (that damn 777z is HUGE!) I opted for the Realistic SCR-8. I chose this radio for a few reasons....It's a mid sized box with good quality sound but it also uses push buttons not switches (like the Lasonic TRC-920) which lesson's the chance of a switch getting busted off in the chaos of transport and full blown party mode. The radio also fits nicely on the floor of the car behind the drivers seat keeping it safe from being smashed in the truck and also air conditioned in the heat of the Arizona desert on the drive there.
Upon arrival, we checked into the hotel we were staying at, then went and got our bags and the SCR-8. As I walked into the lobby with my radio in hand and some of the members of SOULFLY were there. Johnny Chow, who was playing bass guitar for SOULY that night (bassist for Cavalara's Conspiracy) walked straight up to me and said "Dude, bitchen old school radio man....I used to have one just like it!" AND THE PARTY BEGAN!
That afternoon we broke into a few 18 packs of beer and CRANKED UP the Realistic in our room (see pic's below). As night came, the party moved up to the top floor of the hotel to where the other band members of SOULFLY were hanging out and of course the SCR-8 made the trip at moderate volume in the hallways of the hotel and in the elevator. We even made a pass through the lobby and got a thumbs up from the girl working the front desk.
Up stairs the party was going good but the only music was coming from a laptop's built in speakers!
Once we walked in with my radio....The Party Started!
Many comments were made regarding the sound quality and when I showed them I was playing an MP3 player, they were just floored. We then plugged the computer into the SCR-8 and were watching music video's and cranking them up!
As it got later, people headed back to their rooms and the night was over....but that was only Friday night!
Saturday morning came quick and we headed pool side so you know what that means!!!!
RADIO in one hand BEACH TOWEL in the other! The Realistic SCR-8 pulled full Blaster duties at poolside pumping out music at more then 3/4 volume knob for 4 hours straight. People came and went, guys, girls...band members, hotel staff members and not one complaint of volume or music selection. It was a poolside, beer drinking dance party all day long!
Saturday night was the SOULFLY show and after....you guessed it....another PARTY and more music from the SCR-8.
When it comes to a party situation...there is NO replacement for an 80's Blaster. No laptop speakers, iPod docking station (i931 exempt) or any other LAME modern wannabe can touch'em.
Me and Johnny Chow, dueling beards!
