Hi everyone-Here's the real way to enjoy the Sharp GF-8989II.
By listening to Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5!!
I bought this tape brand new in 1982' and it was in my original 8989 so this was special listening to this.
I had it at about 7 and it get's quite loud and really nice!! Treble at full & bass at +3-very nice!! :surf:
This is just the best mid-size boombox-period-love it.Sounds just like a Ghettoblaster should!
Have a super weekend-GB. :-) :sin:  :-O :afro: :breakdance: :stereo: :stereo:

Nice box. If that tape has such sentimental value, you should dub a copy just in case. I have heard may friends devasted when their favorite tapes get eaten when the belts start to go.

Your Sharp looks to be about the size of the Panny RX-5150 or the Blockbuster. How do you think the sound compares?

Hi Norm-don't have one of those but there just is a special sound that comes out of these!
It was my 2nd. boombox that I bought brand new in 1981'-this is a replacement though but it's just loud.pretty clean and just the right size!!
It's hard to compare it to-I'd say it sounds like a smaller Conion C-100-I know they're way louder but the sound characteristics are quite similar!-Super sound!! :surf:
Have a good one-GB  :-) .

...nice boomer. How does it compare to the 9090?

Hi Milo-It's somewhat close but not as much bass-I'm comparing it to my 9191 which is close to the 9090.
The treble and the mids are so nice and this thing rocks-I'd say it might be louder! My 9191 isn't 100% but the 8989 is a special box-it's a rocker!!
Have a good one-GB. :surf:

My box wasn't nice when I got it. It was filthy to the max, with sticker residue and paint everywhere. Gave it a full teardown and it shined up nicely! ;-)

Ghettoman had an affinity for his model as well, ha has multiple boxes.
Boom Shaka has one of the cooler ones I've seen, it's a rare bronze color.
Great size for carrying around, but I think any box is great for carrying, that what they're made for! :breakdance:

:agree: I completely agree with this. I never play original cassettes anymore, *UNLESS* I am copying them to CD, and even then the tape deck running the original tape has to be trusted 100% not to eat the tape.

Once you have the original recording on CD, make a copy to a blank tape, and use that in your boxes. If the copy gets chewed, so what? You just make another. If the original GrandMaster tape gets eaten, you'll scream. Always preserve your cassettes by not playing them, and "backing them up" to a CD. It's well-known that a CD can be played to death and not wear out, but this is not the case with tapes......as I have found out with my Chaka Khan tape ( I feel for you-1984 ) One side of the sound on the tape if almost completely shot.....Fortunate for me, I managed to get an exact original on CD from a music store, and the first thing I did when I got home, was to make a copy of the original CD. I use the copy, and the original stays safely stored away.

So yes, do make copies and back-ups of original tapes! Do it now, before it's too late! :-O

yes, i have done some backups

of some of my tapes.

not only for sentimental and protection purposes,

but also to be able to trade them over the internet.
