Most of you know Sony doesn't F around....they overbuild everything. The CFS-100 mini hifi system in no exception. Here is Agent Orange's pic from his Stereo2Go thread:

It only has 4-inch full-range speakers, but each of them weighs 5.4 lbs! :jawdrop: They weigh as much as Hitachi TRK-9150 speakers, which are much bigger.

First, you need to remove the 6 screws on the back

A ton of fiber-fill inside! Not cheap yellow foam, which doesn't work as well.

But wait, there's 6 more screws inside, holding the front panel on! :-O

Good luck trying to take off the grill for painting....You can't, without cutting it!!!

You've still got 4 more screws to go, to remove the speaker:

Man, I still can't figure out what these cases are made of. White powder comes out of the screw holes, like plastic, but they're a lot heavier than plastic. Could it be some kind of ceramic blend??

I think its plastic only a harder plastic than normal. As far as magnet size they use the same magnet on all different woofers the advantage being smaller woofers have bigger magnets lol . Sony makes some kick ass speakers trust me I have enough Sony speaker's lol.

I thought you were going to say these were aluminum castings. The little Sony one piece that weighs a ton, I think that was aluminum.

ZERO flex in those speaker boxes. No doubt, Sony was at the top of their game.

BTW, in the first picture, what is that on top of the left speaker?

That was my first assumption, until I saw the white powder. This plastic is the heaviest I've ever seen. It's actually got a shine to it like coffee mug ceramic, it's so dense.

That's Agent Orange's pic, and it's some kind of old-school cellphone

No... back in the late '70's and early '80's, many manufacturers made speakers with that tiki grill look... Sansui, Pioneer....

Oh. Didn’t watch the video. But that’s 30 seconds I’ll never get back, lol. They look homemade. I bet if you paint them yellow just right, they’ll look just like the 1-eyed minion.

Technics made speakers with aluminium cases maybe the white powder is corrosion of the alloy? The front and back would be plastic ABS.

It may be fiberglass reinforced ABS, pretty sure they use that for extra stiffness. Costs more though.

Those are self-tapping screws, they thread the hole when they were installed, the shavings stay in the hole. The plastic is probably reinforced with something which also gives it weight, you can tell a lot about plastics by seeing if they float in water, most of the plastics we use everyday are lighter than water and will float but some will sink. Old radios made out of bakelite can be extremely heavy but they tend to also be brittle, these have evolved to the stronger materials we see today. We used to have Ultem Plastic back at the shop, locked up in the vault along with a bunch of other exotic plastics, used in military and medical applications, these were heavy and expensive.

Sony’s biggest problem is lack of deep bass. Even the uplevel sony systems that came on the Ford Edge around 2013ish had no deep bass whatsoever. Most of their boomboxes (if not all of them) fail miserably here as well.
