yesterday --was one of my rare sad rides home from my friend ramons house

well - it wasnt ALL bad -- :-)
i managed to avoid each and every car jacker in his lovely hood
and negotiated $$ the 'great family value' frequent flyer rate with the 4th nicest
hooker on his street :w00t:

ok --so WTF
wheres the sad part ??

its like this ::
after a few weeks of trying --ramon told me to come pick up my FOREVER broken POS
grundig c9000 -- :'-( :'-(
it had been a long time wish list box for me -
small size // bass and treble controls --and a SPECTACULAR FM stereo tuner
and a real sweet dial lamp..
finally - i got this one from france :-O :-D

but - the deck had no sound and the bass sounded like the speakers were shot :sadno:
( the tuner was still EXTREME great )

when he said the speakers were NOT broken --just not 'bass bangers'-
and the deck could never be repaired --i was hurtin bigtime --

usually --if i really like a box --i can bypass any speaker problems by using the
ext speaker set-ups-
and replace the broken decks with my ever-so-good sony D6C outboard deck :-D

but -- looking at the box - on the ride home --i saw that there were no RCA or 1/8"
line-in or out jacks --just the DIN !! --yikes
and - worse --there were no 'normal' speaker connectors-
just some 'impossible' weird holes back there

so - i figured this box was on its way to my far away //sorry fubar collection-
never to be seen again--
but --it was too late to get into my storage building --
so - i brought this dead sucker home --
--
just for 'old times' i whipped out my DIN cord and the D6C-
had forgotten that the 5 pin deal was BOTH record AND playback :-D :-)
and BOINK --made a perfect recording off the super-sharp fm tuner

all encouraged --i bent up some custom paper clip jacks -to create the speaker
connections --used my 2 best bass box speakers - the tele and the marantz--
and BOINK = BASS - like YES !!!!
-----------------------------------
one might argue that 'its NOT a box" :-) ;-) ;-) :-D
however -- the c9000 runs strong on D cells -
and the D6C is a 4AA job --
its got a handle :-)
and heaven knows ----a rack could be built --

well - anyway -- the sad trip home turned into one of the
most capable and best sounding rigs on the planet !!! :breakdance:

If those speakers are anything like other Grundigs I've worked on, I'll bet those are 4"x6" oval full rangers in there. Some decent aftermarket ones might improve the sound a little.

except the high end on these speakers are even more detailed than an aiwa 950 !!!

That because these speakers might as well be the biggest pair of tweeters around... :w00t:

hey BTW --
as a testicle :-) to how great these little marantz 326 speakers really are -- :-O
they are almost interchangeable with the famous tele studio speakers -
which sound TREMENDOUS !!!

Are you really that desperate for something to listen to? Seems to me that you must have some other radio laying around you could use.... maybe even two or three...

Hi Ira,

I just checked my C8800 ( its very similar to the C9000 ) and the sound quality is very good. Excellent bass at low volume and if you pump it up the bass is reduced but not really distorted

So you must have a problem with the built in speakers or their polarity

It sounds like you were able to make a solid evaluation of what you might need to get the sound straightened out. I suppose there is no way to have those speakers rebuilt?

What was the final reason the deck can't be fixed?

Well, at least you were able to build something that makes you happy! Even if you'd need a roll of duct tape to help carry it around! :-O

these grundigs are very good i belive they were mostly for the sw listeners,, and yes 4x6 speakers which is a shame ,, the reason for the deck not working a metal plate that sits under the main board that controls the edit function that sits behind the deck was somehow forced and dislodged and moved into the board and shorted it out and by the looks of it it must of touched multiple times the plate was eaten up in the corners,, ouch
