so i woke up this morning with the intent of making music.
i did my usual coffee and breakfast while poking through craigs list.
this has been a bad week for missed deals.
missed the first ever roland synth unused in the case for 275 beans.
missed a primo korg analog drum machine for sixty five.
so i wasnt really hoping for anything cool.
but there was a terrible photo of a cool looking radio with a fax machine both for twenty bucks a piece. needless to say i am not really interested in a fax machine but the boombox looked interesting.
it was a model i could not make out at all from the photo. i mean i could see it had two antennas and looking at the scale of the cassette door it looked pretty big. it was in port coquitlam and it was sunny. hell i am in coquitlam so how far could it be.
so i looked on the bus info site for how long and how far.
hey its only six miles aways .
i called the guy and arranged to meet up with him.
this is where everything began going wrong.
i missed the bus when the bus did come i ended up being caught in a traffic jam for twenty minutes.
the connectiing bus was over half a hour late and the third bus was also late.
to top things off the crowd on the bus today consisted of some drug addict rehab centers field trip.
so needless to say i was unamused . needless to say i wished i had a set of ear plugs and a can of lysol.
i ended up at the end of the line on the third bus i mean dont know how or why i missed the stop but i was in the middle of nowhere.
the greater vancouver area will shock most unfamiliar with it. i mean you can go from the middle of urban sprawl to being in the middle of a forest with rivers bears and coyotes in a matter of forty five minutes.
so here i was wandering through some trail next to the river . good thing it was a nice sunny day but i was in the middle of noplace.
the trail said it was five kilometers too someplace that i could figure out where i was.
basically it was like deliverance territory without ned beatty.
i knew that as long as there was no ned beatty on this trip i would survive. i mean this was the middle of no where.
eventually i came to a paved road and asked some passers by where salisbury street was.
thats about six kilometers north of here.
:evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad: :evilmad:
i had on good shoes and wasnt up for wasting another fin on bus fair so i double timed it in that direction.
as i walked the houses became more and more twin peaks meets deliverance like.
i was sweating pretty hard at this point i am sure with the lack of food and scowl on my face i looked like i belonged with the day trip i had seen before.
so i arrived at the purple door the house was ramshackle almost falling down.
i knocked and a nice man who looked like a cross between boo radley and the giant from twin peaks came to the door wearing a nice pair of purple coloured perscription glasses.
**** i am in deliverance i could practically hear the dueling banjos revving up.
there is sat in front of me a citizen jtr 1246 i thought to myself taking in all its filth what the hell did i do this for.
blood sugar was at a epic low point now the room felt like it was on a twenty degree slope and i just wanted to get the hell out of there.
so twenty bucks is good. yep the guy says. i have another one just like it but its broken. sure man lets take a look. the other was badged a viking and it was way cleaner than the one i got but missing the tape door and did not make any sound.
i gotta give that one a pass i mean its nice but i cant carry two back its a few miles back to the bus and i am knackered from the trip here.
sure thing. deal was done and i was out the door huffing the fairly heavy citizen box down the street.
now i have another citizen unit at home that also runs on eight batteries and it sounds like crappola.
however it also wieghs about half as much as this one.
finally after some time passing, about a hour i found the bus.
i climbed on with the look of the bus driver eyes on the box. i thought to myself just try it buddy make a comment about not turning it on and i will rip you a new ear hole. lol.
i was freaking grumpy as hell at this point and excuse me had now become move to people blocking the isle of the bus.
i found a seat at the back and put the thing on my lap.
three buses later and the blood sugar now in negative numbers i am sure i made it in the house.
before anything else i bolted down a bowl of weatabix and came back to life as my blood sugar numbers got back online again.
this thing is filthy and before i do anything i need to clean it.
the entire box was covered with what seemed to be a coating of oil dust then dried with nicotine film and saw dust on top of it.
i noticed a small crack in the lexan .
theres no way this thing is going to work i thought.
i figured ah at least its only twenty bucks so i will clean it up anyways. out came qtips and a cloth around a butter knife to get into the crevices.
i cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. i got out the steam cleaner and cleaned it with that.
eventually it came up fairly nicely no it dont look new but its nice.
i got out the silver sharpie and a black one. i touched up the areas of silver on the edges with the sharpie and the black on the speaker trims.
its not a great job but from three feet aways it looks decent. i also decided to preseve the lexan i would put some black electrical tape over the sides where the tiny crack was. its barely noticeable but i thought metal screws against plastic and vibration was not gonna last too long. the tap was a quick dirty idea but again from three feet aways it looks decent.
. there was a ton of rust under the lexan too but i managed to poke a thin blade with a lens cleaning cloth up in there. it worked and i got rid of most of it.
originally i thought that by taking the screws out of the lexan the piece would come right off but no go.
so crunch time will it work. i mean i had serious doubts when i was cleaning it. also i was a bit put off by this box being a 8 d cel box. i mean for its size and wieght i thought for sure it would be a ten cel box. its only a hair smaller than my m70 and almost as heavy
now the thing flickers to life really i am tired at this point. hmmm crap no sound. this radio does not work i was a little bummed. so i tried the tape deck hey the deck is working i wonder if the deck will play a tape.
sure enough the tape deck worked hey this thing sounds good. in fact it sounds really good. there is a lot of bass and the sound it very nice.
a few moments i discovered i had the sleep funtion turned on.
the box works really good. every thing works.
a played a side of the tape in the photo for good measure.
this box has really excellent sound and after a half a hour of listening i was pretty stoked to have it.
no it wont replace your m70 however it is a very very good box.
the bass is really nice and this most likely is a box that would be overlooked due to the citizen badge.
it may not be a must have box but if its cheap it is for sure a must not pass it by box either.
i think that this box most likely would not perform as well on batteries.
on mains it pumps very good with a nice warm mellow bass that you can feel.
