Has anyone ever thought of either modifying a prebuilt boombox? What about a 1 off custom one?
I'm thinking of doing a custom one with a touchscreen but I want it to have the old style feel so thinking of using a cassette deck for the mp3 holder.
Let me know which way to go. wanna go at least 8" woofers if not 10" also thinking of using lit-ion batteries. also have a 7" touchscreen I can use.
Well let me know I figured this would be the crowd to chuck this idea out to.

PS I'm modding my TRC-931to have about 150watts per channel using a class D amp! I'll let y'all know how this thing goes!

Oh boy are you new  . I'm planning on adding a class D amp to my Dynasty Wheely (top pic) and bypassing the original circuit/amps to really get clear output.

It's been done before. Here's a link to old S2G member Krush's project:

I was going to get my class D amp from parts-express too. Not that high of a wattage though.

Good luck with your project.

Think I'm gonna use this one. http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau288a/slau288a.pdf I got a transformer from rat-shack to give me about 38v dc @ 2A Should be good and LOUD!.
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/p ... s5630.html
gotta figure out batteries. I'll make a video got some new speakers 3 way pyle drivers Yellow (my favorite color)
bad pic but you get the idea. gotta get the grills to stay they were made for more foam on the edge of the speaker.
so now just got to add the dynamat, mount the amp, fix the mounting screw holes previous owners over tighten them now screws won't hold box together. Idea small amount of JB weld to act as washer in hole tap and rescrew. (will test with ink pen first (about the same diameter)).

PS got both tape decks to work (new belts and some serious head cleaning) also could they have used smaller wire? They kept breaking every time i moved the tape deck around. I'm rewiring things constantly UGH!

As always comment and suggestion are encouraged!

Does anyone have an orginal TRC-931? if so please weigh it. I want to know how much weight I have added.
Here are some more pictures. The last pic is the new amp i attached to the back panel. with the new transformer and the rectifier to give me 37vdc.
Ok the JB Weld trick worked filled in the screw holes then tapped them and now it locks together tight!! The speakers sound great. Glad I went with the 3 way. With my new amp I could blow the 8" woofers if I wanted to the loudness is insane. Still gotta make a video! :) Hope to finish this up next week. Gluing amp and grills etc tonight, so in da morning I can got to home Depot think I'm gonna swap out the plastic pin thats in the handle out for a metal bolt (due to the weight i added). Also thinking of adding some plexiglass inside to seperate the woofers from the rest of the box this would allow me to add some polyfill see if the sound is better or worst. Anyone think I've gone too far with the boombox yet? I me I'm going from a 22watt per channel to ~125 watt per channel Class D amp!!
Well as always post your comments.

ok added dynamat. the upgrade has now caused other issues. The handle will not handle the weight  :w00t: so I have to beef that up. other than that it sounds so freakin loud.. the volume knob is way under senstive 100k vs 50k (couldn't find the 50k 7 lead volume pot) So if any one has one!! (hint)
It's so loud that it vibrates on the floor. the back air vent feel like a fan. Covered the side ones with the dynamat. Amp will stay cool thou :-D
Had to mess with the choke about a million times to get the loudness and hum to mine liking.
Tried the polyfill and the separating with plexiglass but the box is too small it sounded really bad (distortion). but will definitely cause some heads to turn from far away!!

Very cool  Where are the sides of the box. The 931's front and sides are usually one piece :hmmm: Take lots of pictures :morepics: :morepics: :-D

I think this is the rev 2 of it since the back and sides are one piece. I thought i remembered there being inputs on the side of my original box. I'll take some more now that the dynamat and everything works. I dont know how long the bottom tape deck door will stay closed lot of air pressure / wind blowing out of it  also gotta figure out the handle.
Any suggestions on beefing up the handle connection? Am thinking get rid of the plastic pin thing and putting a bolt thru it also adding some fiberglass to the inside the whole top flexes when I pick it up.

Gonna due the fiberglassing this weekend plus the metal bolt thru the handle. I'll take some pics.
I think my next project is going to be total custom boombox. gotta work out some details but should be huge. does anyone know the dimensions of the largest boombox mass produced? due you think the 8" was the largest woofer used? hmmm :hmmm:
I'm thinking all stealth everything hidden behind doors. black of course 3 way speaker system. build the system around the speakers. build the speaker enclosures. build those to spec and then the rest of the box.all fiberglass. Love that stuff!!

From what I know, the Helix Wheely (Dynasty HT-959, JC 2000, and other aka's) has 2 10" speakers and is known as the biggest one piece production boombox.

That first picture I posted in your thread is The Dynasty HT-959 Wheely.

Thanks, I think thats close to what I'm thinking the kickers I'm thinking about using like to have at least 1 cu ft of air.
I'll add some more pics of the lasonic tonight i'm getting the fiberglass to see if I can beef up the top of the box to handle the added weight of my mods. wasn't expecting the pyles to be so heavy.

Ok got it all back together and added the fiberglass on top so the box can handle the added weight. I got 106db out of the box! Now when it's sitting on my floor it moves around. might have to added some rubber feet. Don't know how long the box will be able to take this punishment! :w00t:

Here are some pics (not the best fiberglass job I've done but works)
