Hey!
Allow me to introduce myself:
I am Elias from Sweden!
I am currently studying astronomy in the UK .
I love playing the bassoon, DJing (not vinyl though ), climbing, playing chess, reading and wathcing movies.
Growing up in Sweden was great but not that exciting. No hanging out in the streets, no youth pranks, we mostly hung out at home.
I got into Hip Hop music when I was 12, I got "Hip Hop the Collection" from my parents (which now realize was very generous, considering Straight Outta Compton and Natural Born Killaz were on it ).
I got my first boombox when I was maybe 15, this orange philips with CD-player and MP3 support, we would burn CDs with a 100 songs or so and take it to our scoutcamps in the summer. My brother got one as well and we used to compare the sound .
I thought it was very loud and sounded great, I changed my mind by now.. Those speakers are tiny!
Time went by, we made more CDs, I got more into Hip Hop and finished sencondary school. Then the summer of 2010 I was donating some of my aunts stuff to a charity shop, and I went to have a look around and stumbled upon this Philips:

They didn't know if it worked, but for £ 10 I had to have it. Got home, turned it on and KABOOOM what a massive sound I thought. Could even connect my MP3-player and play whatever I wanted! Got batteries and took it to all camps, parties and barbeques I could. Started to makes cassettes on my dad's stereo system, so far I have 7, 4 with Hip hop, and three "ultimate mixes" .
I listen to all hip hop before 2000s: Kool Herc, Flash, Bambaataa, Furious 5, Threacherous 3, Run DMC, LL, Newcleus, Mantronix, Fat Boys, Eric B & Rakim (favourites), BDK, ATCQ, N.W.A, Gang Starr, KRS-ONE, Wu-Tang and maaaaaany more .
Then I got into university in the UK and I gave the boombox to my brother.
I came here in September 2011 and I thought I had to have a boombox for music listening.
I got a JVC pc-200 the first month. It's good looking but I am disappointed by the bass, not good for hip hop! All working and shiny I was happy, but I wanted something BIGGER. Another one on Ebay was a Saisho T909 that looked HUGE. Appearances can be deceiving though, and Its the same size as the JVC.. Sounds much better though, double cassettes and lots of levers and stuff . Then I saw this portable system with a record player, Philps BF1483 (couldn't find any pictures...) With lights on the Eq and a 3D output level display, it's pretty cool and sounds lovely. Separate wooden speakers could be why . I was happy with that for a couple of months, then spring came and I wanted something that could dominate the streets.
I found an ICS STR-5091 on Ebay Germany and I got it for € 100 . But it arrived broken and the electronics shop could only get one speaker to work.. One speaker still makes alot of sound and it looks gorgeous, so I am not miserable. But then I had to have another one, that worked. By now I was checking out the posts here on different models and knew all the major models. Got a TEC-879 RR for only € 50 , looks almost new but only runs on batteries. Sounds nice though. So that's my collection so far, 4 of 'em.
Here are some pictures:
From the top, TEC 879 RR, Saisho T909, JVC PC-200 and ICS 5091.
So alot of pictues, but they turned out great in the sun and I know that when I look at a thread I want pictures and not just boring stories .
To me, owning a boombox is like owning a piece of Hip Hop history, like being in Wild Style or Beat Street.
To keep them and the culture alive literary and figuratively is important to me when you see today's music and people with headphones everywhere...
I'm not gonna have the biggest or best collection, maybe a dozen boxes that I love and can use regularly .
Hoping to be part of many discussions and sharing here.
Any UK boxes for sale, send me a message!
Peace.
