i wonder if the initial boombox kind of designed itself?
If you were making the first ever portable "stereo" then by default you will have two speakers that you want to keep apart on the unit your making. Then you ask youself where shall i put the tape deck? well theres a space inbetween the speakers. Just leaves where to put the tuner? Well the tuning dial is long so stick it across the top (or bottom).

No doubt the form was largely dictated by function then they would have needed to get creative on the style, that would have been one hell of a cool job to have.

I'd love to see some documentation on the portable audio R&D groups of each manufacturer, if theres any around.
I'm betting theres not much written on the subject thus far. There was an episode of the series called Design Classics
that had an ep on the Walkman which was very enlightening.
