As many of you know, for the past 4 years I have been involved with the RELAY FOR LIFE cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
In a nutshell, it is a fundraiser / awareness campaign to fund research on all things cancer related.
It is a relay walk for 24 hours. The event takes place at our local high school where everyone walks around the football field track. This year it will take place Saturday, May 21st, 2016
The first time I attended this event in support of my friend Katie Swan and her sister Laura Riley I had no idea what to expect. It was a very sobering experience to say the least. It is, in short, a support event for those suffering with and those who lost someone to cancer. If you have experienced someone suffering through this, then you know what I mean.
The event is huge. People do their best to lighten the mood by standing strong and some even dress up in team themed costumes. There are groups of men that wear bra's and tootoo's in their support of curing breast cancer. Other's that have crazy colored wigs, ect.
When I first saw everyone's efforts, I thought: "There is something I need to do to stand out". So I started walking with a boombox.
The first year I brought 6-7 radio's of various sizes. I have walked with everything from TRC-935's to the massive Intersound J1 747 Super Jumbo and Helix HX-4700.
I am now known as the "Boombox Guy", of which I am very proud. But it comes with a cost. During the 24 hour relay I have walked over 15 miles. Last year, while hauling the J1 I pulled my back out and was down for a few months. Even while using one of BLU-FUZ's blaster straps.
But the reason for the event isn't just to support those with cancer, it is to raise the needed funds for research. The American Cancer Society is directly responsible for funding some of the most recent cancer breakthroughs happening at colleges and private institutions around the country. Each year, during the event, speakers talk about what is happening on the front lines.
But these efforts aren't just for the people in this country, they are for ALL PEOPLE. Any cancer breakthrough will serve us all.
This is why I walk, this is why I carry a blaster during the event and this is why THIS YEAR I'M GOING BIGGER THAN EVER!
This year, I will be carrying (among other radio's) the mighty Wheely Dynasty HT-959.
I have worked hard to acquire (thank you member Dr DER) and rebuild this particular radio for this particular event. WHY? Because every year I show up with a bigger and badder radio! I want to totally blow the minds of the other Relay'ers as I have done every year since my first.
Maybe next year I will relay with SuperDuper's "Collective" Mega Blaster! That would be cool.
If you would like to donate to my efforts CLICK HERE http://main.acsevents.org/goto/cancerblaster
So, I am asking you, if you have any family members you would like to remember / support, please make a donation. You can donate in their honor as well with a personalized LUMINARIA that will be created with their name on it (only $10.00)
Each year I have walked for my Uncle Bob, and my Godparents Diane and Cecil Lewis of which they have all had Luminaria. This year will be no different.
If you make a donation, with a Luminaria for a family member, it is possible for me to acquire the Luminaria after the event and mail it to you. PM me with details and I will do my best to make that happen.
The Luminaria are made by volunteers and look like this....

I know money is tight these days and I want you to know that donations of even $1 add up quickly. Last year, thanks to many Boomboxery members, I was able to raise $405 on my own for my team! That's the most I have ever raised.
