i've been revising the J2 design and tweaking some of the glitches in my original art, but will likely re-do everything from scratch in a final version as there's some generational losses & inconsistencies in the art by now, but this is REAL CLOSE to what my final design will be and the purple color (will do a rainbow series plus chrome & gold with red trim) is what i'd choose for my own box. had the J1 looked like this when i shopped for a replacement for the lasonic TRC935 of mine that was stolen in LA, i would have bought it on the spot.

J-1 fans might find my minimalist interpretation "boring" compared to the flashy original, but i prefer "all business" designs like the best japanese boxes. i considered re-branding the J2 as a panasonic.

anyways... i hope some of you like this new UNOBTANIUM box.

i've also started designing a new "high end" box from scratch. i'm doing some materials research & have to looks some dimensions up as it will be based on real world speakers... right now, i'm using 8" dayton reference woofers and tianle air motion tweeters, but will likely switch to kevlar woofers to match the tweeters' yellow.

in the meantime...

enjoy.

you know... instead of creating another thread... i'll just add the gold J1 here too

You know... I'm kind of liking that gold version. The red and gold really seem to go well with each other.

For the second one, if only we could have purple LED meters!

purple LEDs exist. they're just not as cheap as red. i used them for the record level meters too, but like the contrast with ice blue.

because i'm an artist, purple's always been my favorite color.

at 3 years old, i hated red so much that i had my tricycle taken away once i tricked my grandfather into revealing how to open a can of paint after he refused to hotrod my trike with the same paint he used for his stock car. it was sloppy as i used at least a 3" brush and i dripped on the garage floor, but by golly i fixed the red!

"don't take my tricycle grandma! i'm just ahead of my time! some day, customizing bikes will be a thing!"

when i re-do the J-2, i'll do a red & gold version. i'll HAVE TO redo it for the new wider speaker trim rings because i couldn't get rid of the pink fringing which drove me nuts. i tried repaints over the fringing, and it just moved the pink band out more. the J-1's here too so you can TRY to spot all of the changes i made to come up with the J-2, but most will miss some of the more subtle changes like enlarging the cassette buttons.

i like the black & purple combo too because it looks like a "night party" box.

yes... red (purple) BOTH go nicely with gold. you can't see the electric motor, 4 x 12" subs, or tube amps under the rear window in this pic i photoshopped, but this imaginary ride would thump hard (with SEALED subs)

Both do look great to me, though the gold just about dips it at the line for me. Great work.

pointing out that i LAUGHED when i saw the gold crown at the shop i ALMOST bought a J-1 to replace my stolen lasonic hurt someone's fellings here i think. why? i can't wrap my head around it no matter how hard i try. to me, ALL of the chinese boxes looked tacky compared to sane japanese designs whether it was the gold on the crown, the fake RTA & "bubblegum stick" on the 10" rexel, the terrible red, yellow, green, & white (randomly laid out at that with no symetry) LED colors of the disco box, or even those giant J-1 LED meters. i like simple "all business" designs like the JVC M90 myself, but i did the gold for those that can't get enough bling & eye candy.

check the "kevlar gold" out in the all new "big bad buh-boom box" (originally called "wall of sound". the "gold" makes a lot more sense there, and isn't shiny. that, and it's ALL BUSINESS except for the RTA bling, but at least it's functional bling.

OK... now i know... i'm going to re-crop that. (my new avatar). the site's adding the blank background. that's why all my avatar attempts have been small & blurry! anyways... i think the "4B" will be my permanent avatar as it would be an awesome sounding unit if it existed, and it's not based on another design. i was just popping by to see how the new undersized & blurry avatar looks. it shoul look a little clearer when i crop the background out, i hope.

i'm glad some here are enjoying the fantasy boxes even if they don't exist, but maybe someone'll purple their J-2 up now.

even if purple LEDs didn't exist, a manufacturer could always custom tint white LEDs too. yeah... bean counters would HATE my ideas! LOL
