After making my wife nuts driving around Okinawa, Japan looking for boom boxes for the last to months I finally got a JVC / Victor RC-838.
As excited as I was to see it arrive, I have to say, my VERY tolerant wife and her daughter were less than impressed!
When the radio showed up, they couldn’t cared one way or the other. My wife simply said “Oh, it finally showed up huh!†and her daughter went up stairs and locked her self in her room (16 year old's!)
I’m sure as you read this, you know exactly where I’m coming from!
WELL, all that changed a few hours later…
Before I go on, I have to mention that the house we are living in here is Japan is a rental, supplied by my wife’s job along with all the furniture and appliances. Other then a few things my wife and her daughter brought from home, there isn’t too much over here. One thing that we haven’t had is a stereo of any kind. We have been using some small computer speakers for music play back and they SUCK!
So…back to the story…
Last night, a mere four hours after the radio arrived at the door, the three of us were settled in with the lights turned down and the TV on watching a DVD (Die Hard 3) when the door bell rang!
Unexpectedly two of my wife’s coworker / friends and their 4 teen age daughters showed up with a bottle of wine and wanting to PARTY!
Being the Party MASTER that I am, I was on it! I asked for my step daughters iPod (my wife, step daughter and all their friends listen to Hip Hop, I’m a Metal Head).
I grabbed the new BLASTER, set it up on the table, hooked the iPod up to the line in and with in seconds music filled the room, the ladies were laughing and toasting their glasses and the kids were dancing in the living room and IT WAS A PARTY!
As I stood back and made some Jiffy Pop popcorn for the masses, I couldn’t help but realize that with out that radio being there the scene would have been VERY different.
It really is amazing what these machines bring into our lives!
As the night rolled on, the party slowed down and the ladies with their kids called it a night…the goodbyes were said and the door closed and my wife turned to me and said “Thank Youâ€. I got a quick “Thanks†from her daughter as she darted up stairs and some how…maybe even if it was just a second…They both got it. They both understood WHY I collect…
