That's a Walkman Pro! They can't be to rare since Sony made them from 1984 to 2003. Lots of great features that are very rare for a portable. Amorphous tape head and a quartz direct drive capstan. 4AAs which you would need to run those bright LED meters. Good battery life. It even has a input level.

And i agree with you my friend  The deck on these are better than most boomboxes :w00t: I used to use mine as part of my old recording studio, the recordings on these are out of this world, i would love to buy another but im not paying £200 for any walkman ever again, i recently bought a sony dd9 of ebeay for £200 it was cnackered, i took it in for repair sony couldn't fix it so i left it there in discust.

I would love another one of these though if sombody wants to sell me a cheap working one.

yes -- they are usually much too expensive - for just a little extra deck -

but --in case you do ever want one -
there are about 20 per month for sale -- :-O
so you could hit on a low $$ BIN

i got one for about US $120

Sure has a solid and hi quality look to it but I would never pay that much so I'll probably never have on. I have noticed the prices on a lot of the better tape decks home and portable are still fairly high so I agree with you Ira they aren't dead yet. :nonono:

hey don --
asking you or anybody for this opinion

these high-end "PRO" decks were supposed to me made for the
the 'important high-end' field reporters :w00t:

but they are STILL selling like crazy !!

so - the question is --
after 40 years of TAPES --
and all the 40 years of hi-tech communications --

are all the concert and field recordings - still done with TAPES !!!!???????
:-) :-D

a lot of people still prefer to use tape for field recording.
one its reliable easy to obtain a casette pretty much any place in the world.
it can be fixed fairly easily too almost anyplace in the world.
its not so much they make better recordings its really also about ease of use.
there have been some really good portable recorders made by roland and zoom over the last couple of years.
they record in various resolutions. they are very good but if your break them you might as well chuck them.

I find it hard to believe tape popularity is strictly with the collectors so I agree that they must still be in use and bill may be right.

portable dat was seriously the bomb for the longest time but try to find a portable dat tape now is kind of like looking a tail light lens for a 1957 studebaker silver hawk.
seriously tho heres the other market for tapes.
the blind i mean a blind person is not going to buy a fancy digital recorder anytime soon. they are not made for them to use they havent got brail touch screens yet and well they just are not intuitive.
tape wont go aways completely anytime soon.
as long as there is blind people remote areas and students who need a good alternative to a expensive digital recorder the tape recorder is here to stay.
books for the blind are available on cd but most often they still come on tape.
