tape deck autostop issue

Just got a mitsuba box in and the tape deck doesnt seem to work correctly. When I press play it immediately stops as though the autostop function is kicking it off.
Any ideas?

Do you have a cassette in it?

yep
same symptoms with and without cassette. FF and RW cause the same autostop type symptom

Sounds like something is preventing one or more gears from activating. It could be a missing belt. If it's logic controlled, you might have to get some real help.

That is correct. I knew the tape deck didnt work when I got it though. All the ad said was "tape doesnt work, needs something" and I was hoping it just had bad belts. That's why i got it on the cheap.

Worked on many kabooms (all boxes really, just kaboom comes to mind) and that finicky deck did the same thing on numerous occasions because of a minor belt stretch..

Great! I had planned on replacing the belts anyway.
