I scored this SunnyVOX 5200, aka Telefunken CR-8200 a couple few years back with a bum tape deck. I worked on it, here & there, for hours, getting the right belts, polishing the head to a gleaming sparkle. When I got it, the cassette keys needed straightening, greased & worked into their sweeet spot so the action is spot on & very reliable. The belt for the capstan, to the motor, was obliterated by age & was replaced by a belt I purchased with a set for re-belting a JVC M70. It worked like a charm. I also changed out the pinch roller with a brand new one. I did a basic lube of all spindles & motor. I oiled the capstan shaft where it enters the sleeve from both sides & ran the deck on RR, FF, Play for quite a few minutes before setting speed on playback, azimuth, etc.

It's tricky setting everything up by ear but quite fun to do. I compare a tape recording of some music taken from a digital format to make adjustments until the speed & pitch is so close you can't tell the difference between the tape & the original track. I toggle between the digital source & the recorded copy, looking for differences in tone & speed between the 2 audio sources, then adjust until they match as close as I can get it.

This SunnyVOX has a very good, heavy duty cassette deck & its speed & accuracy are spot on. I really am surprised by the quality of the sound on a Normal MAXELL UR60 tape. I record in Dolby B & the Denon 3 head deck I have makes excellent HXPRO recordings.

Listen to the Yuotube video with good, accurate sounding headphones. For a video recording of a boombox playing a tape, it doesn't do it justice but you get the idea.

I do the same have to remember that the wow and flutter affects the speed at the beginning and end of tape. I just use YouTube official videos.

I did order 3 test tapes & downoloaded a Windows app to check my adjustments. It should be interesting to see how close I could get by ear, comparing the digital source to the tape recordings I made. I'll try to do a couple of posts detailing my experiences. Should be fun.
