Ok,
so the boombox I won off ebay finally arrived today after several weeks, and the important bits are actually in much better condition than pictured! This makes me happy, as the main 2 pieces are the woofers.

Now my question:
Was the trc-931 ever offered in some kind of red edition? Check out my picture, and tell me if it's normal for there to be red woofers or not? I only bought it due to this striking rarity, as I have never seen one before with such slick red woofer cones.

It's missing the battery cover, both chrome grills are broken, and the leds from the top left corner seem gone so I'll be setting up a wanted thread for those, but otherwise, it's nice to finally have one of these babies again! I sold mine approx. 4-5 years ago, and have lusted after another for too long. :-D

The tweeters are red on all of the early 900 series boxes I do believe. I love it as the red tweets gives colour to each one :-)

Red tweets is common up to the 975, then it went black.

Not sure why the speakers are red though. You will have to open it up and tell us. I was going to bid on it too because it looked neat.

I just opened it up really quick, and firstly:
- At least 2 of the screw bosses on the face are twisted off, either due to someone really, REALLY overtightening the screws, or due to age, or maybe just both. This means I will need a new front housing at minimum. The rear housing is ok, but I'm guessing if someone has the front they wound also have the back, so I'll say I need both now.

- The led vue meter from the top left corner, upon closer inspection from openning the case, has simply been cut out, wires cleanly cut. The other wires have misc. electrical tape in places, possibly from factory, possibly not.

This means that the box is pretty much a parts box now, as I really need a better box with bad speakers haha. I'll be keeping the red woofers and the tweeters are in good shape so they might go over to the new frame depending, plus any other parts that are missing from it, but I need a good donor frame to put these beautiful red cherries into!

Anyone got a suitable one? ;-)
eric

**edit**
Nothing much happens when turned on. The knob for input just turns free. I can use my ipod though, and she still sings :-)
btw, the rear of the woofers appear to be white, and the red is a colouring applied that has stained through in some areas. Say 35W on the back. I still believe them to be factory, as Lasonic could have just coloured their white woofers for some reason which is still unknown...

Ok, after a bit of reserach through some pics, they appear the same in all other aspects, including badging, the metal basket, and surround, but in palce of Dyna is says NAE. Could this still be an original Lasonic speaker?

The back magnet on all Lasonic Speakers say LUCKY on them, and usually are 15 watts or so ;-)

I'll have to go back and look at some photos but I could have sworn I saw Dyna on them. :hmmm:

Either way, looking at the back of the cones it looks like the face was recoated in red... :hmmm:

Thanks Bill

So, here we seem to have an oddity from Lasonic: Red woofers without any different markings on the casing or special graphics. Ah well, I like them, especially the brightness! They look exactly like bigger versions of the tweeters which gives the box a nice look
eric

**edit**
Yeah they are white on the back and have been coated red. This colour of red seems to be exactly the same as the tweets though, so that is why I think it's Lasonic done. Would they bother making full red cones if it was some kind of super limited edition? My bet is they would just coat white ones, whic happears to be what these are.

Those don't say Dyna, which is good for my cause of believing mine are authentic and possibly some kind of custom production :breakdance:

Hey Stretch,

I wouldn't give up on that 931 just yet. There are simple ways to repair the screw posts, I'm sure if you did a search in the repair section you will find it (Fatdog, you got anything for this subject?)

Also, the speaker guards can be glued or replaced.

QUESTION: Is the Selector switch the knob that is broken? (switches from tape to radio to aux). If so, take a picture of the tuner board model number you have, because I may have a spare for you!

I'm sure you could get an LED display too. Every proper Lasonic needs it's dancing LED's!

As for your red speakers being factory, I would tend to think someone just painted them, but that's OK, they look great and that radio is worth saving!

I think speakers are not the way lasonic sent them and they are probably stained with red marker or painted. Screw posts can be fixed, Chrome bars can be fixed, and switches can be fixed. Don't give up, make it whole again

It's the switch that goes from phono, radio, tape. Where would I find the board model number?

Update:

Took one speaker out to see the redness up close...
It's paint, and badly done at that. :'-(
I thought it was special, and that's why I bought it. Ah well, I guess it will be a good parts box now so I can get one in worse shape and use the good knobs and tape doors from this one :-/
Sorry to have alarmed any of you to a potential Lasonic find.

From the very beginning -- as I read through the post, I always felt that was a repainted job. The fact that someone messed with it by cutting out the LED already tells me the likelihood of anything like that being original was highly suspect. Broken screw towers isn't really anything to worry about. There are lots of threads on how to fix those, making them as strong as before. Just do a search. As for the meter -- I'm sure someone is going to step up soon, and offer one to you. Your Lasonic can be fixed. However, if you are gonna part out yours, let us know so we can all raise our hands and make our list.... ;-)

Heh, Yeah it's probably going to part out. I've fallen hard off the high i was on about getting such a cool box, now Idon't want to bother with it. I'll make sure to get a decent one from the start next time, red speakers or not!
If you need parts, let me know. send a pm. give me an offer. If you want the whole thing even better heh.
