If you are sure you caught all the capacitors, then the issue is almost certainly a leaky transistor.

I'm looking at the small board on the tape deck and there is a transistor number a673 i get readings on all directions so can i asume that is the one??? if so do you know a common replacement for it super duper

all sorted i replaced the caps on the speakers (i didn't do them) and it seems to be ok not sure what i done but it seems great!!! one thing of note since recapping this box the line in is soooooooooooooooo loud even with 50% input volume the volume control at 3 is very loud!!

when you say 'speaker caps'...do you mean the small filter caps for the tweeters?

yer they are the one's not sure that was the problem as it was ok on line in/radio but still it seems ok maybe it's because i removed the transistor on the board on the tape deck to test!!

2 bottles of beer that was the reason. It could've been a poor solder joint but chances are, the transistor was failing internally. The soldering/heat process probably reactivated it but you might want to keep an eye on that one. Tweeter bypass caps do not discriminate against AM/FM and cassette.

yer at least two bottles i was getting well jarred off about it!! the transistor was open each way I didn't test it again but put it back and now it works i didn't think the caps on the speakers would cure it but i forgot to do them when i recapped the rest of the machine!!!! I will at least know if it goes again that it needs a transistor thanks again super duper you're a star i never would of check that
