my 9090 has been annoying me for a long time with them dirty speakers so today i found some speakers from a hitachi which fit!! also in a bid to get more bass.Well they went in a treat and the bass is awsome what a improvement but yes theres a but i'm worried the amp may blow as they are 20w 8 ohms speakers not like the original which are 4 ohms. The volume is reduced but not alot what do ya reckon?? also should I had swapped the resistors aswell or will this be ok?

It is not recommended to install a woofer in an amp with 4 ohm output into 8ohms ... ... You can take your box to smoke!

BZZZZZ...............WRONG! Hardmen. It is risky and more stressful on the amp when installing a lower impedance load (speakers). Since Saxonman is going the opposite route, his amps are completely safe.

Saxonman, No worries at all. The increased impedance is why you are noticing slight reduction in volume but the overall usable volume (cranked up) is probably the same because they probably distort less. I'll bet the originals distorted far earlier so you couldn't crank then as high.

My bad! :bang:

I think woofers are the same (bad) effect of speakers with the amp, with no same impedances!!

I have now put the grills back!! would love to keep them off but I feel exposed with em like that!! like when i take the grills of my 767 it just makes me nervous!! speeshli when the kids are around!!!! I'm not going to bang on about this box but it sounds sooooo much better more bass and the highs seem clearer whether it's because the lows are lower i don't know but what a improvement it's just a pity they are not the same as the originals!!But the box is well worn and is a going out box so doesn't really matter thanks again for ya help guys!!

Great Mod....I may look for replacements for my TRC-918....are those 5 inch speakers?

BTW, it looks great with out the grills...But Lets Be Real....Something will hit those (like a child's finger) and your starting from scratch again!

4-ohm to 8-ohm load is -3dB less output and ~50% less power going into the speaker. But..... if the speakers are more efficient than ones they replace, you won't notice that at all. Plus, going to an 8-ohm load will reduce distortion dramatically. The amp will definitely like it better. Since it works and sounds great it seems you got MAXIMUM WIN all the way around!

I like it!!! if you push it to full power the bass is better than my 767! not as loud but very punchy, lets say very retro bass!!! grandmasterflash style!!
