i had that problem on my hitachi (it was chewing up all my tapes)

one spindle wasnt moving and the reel on that side of the cassette was staying still, whilst the other reel was turning, and tape was coming out the bottom of the cassette/ getting caught up inside the deck. i took the box apart and it turned out to be a stretched belt

also with the hitachi, i took the front of the case off, masked up the front and painted it gloss black along the top and sides. and you would never notice

this is one of my tapes after the 3d80 tried to play it

and after i had it open

probably abit off topic, but my 1984 saisho tv after i painted it. i masked it up in sections and did the black and silver. just saying it shouldnt be too hard to do on your sony... if your careful

Learn by doing I always say....take a pic of every step.
if all else fails buy another box and start over.............
Don't know much about Sonyo but Sanyo has a few models to bugger with.........
