Sony retires the Walkman
October 25, 2010 - 12:07PM

After retiring the floppy disk in March, Sony has halted the manufacturing and distribution of another now-obsolete technology: the cassette Walkman, the first low-cost, portable music player.
The final batch was shipped to Japanese retailers in April, according to IT Media. Once these units are sold, new cassette Walkmans will no longer be available through the manufacturer.
The first generation Walkman (which was called the Soundabout in the US, and the Stowaway in the UK) was released on July 1, 1979 in Japan. Although it later became a huge success, it only sold 3000 units in its first month. Sony managed to sell some 200 million iterations of the cassette Walkman over the product line’s 30-year career.
Somewhat ironically, the announcement was delivered just one day ahead of the iPod’s ninth anniversary on October 23, although the decline of the cassette Walkman is attributed primarily to the explosive popularity of CD players in the 90s, not the iPod.

I heard about that on KYW News Radio (Philly) this morning... I'm surprised the Walkman lasted this long.

There'll still be cheap-ass Coby and other weak branded portable cassette players for many years to come tho. :-D

Ah man, makes me sad... I'm really missing those days... walkman listening while riding my BMX bike.... walkman fell down going full speed, nothing happened to it when I made the U-turn to go get it! I still have it and it works!!! Way to go Sony!!! :smooch:

Well they still have there sony walkman mp3 player

I used to have a silver MD Walkman - hit the eject button and the minidisc would fly out the retractable top at a respectable speed if you weren't careful. :-D One of the coolest Sony products I ever owned! Then I got up and got off the bus without checking behind me one day...

Still, I can't remember if I ever owned a Sony Walkman. :hmmm: I did own about 4 Sony Discman's tho until minidisc came out.

I wonder how long it will be before ALL cassettes are taken out of production?

Probably 5-15 years from now when cassette manufacturers get word that the sale of cassettes aren't covering the costs to make 'em.

What I wonder is, how many other big name portable cassette player makers have already gotten out of that part of the market and who's still in it... Is Sony the first to quit? When the inventor bows out, the rest can't be too far behind.
