I was at the thrift store today ,and couldn't resist picking up this 5$ FH boombox.

Compared to the crown, the sony had more power and a much deeper bass. However, it just did not compare to the richer sound of the crown.
I rotate boxes, but the sony didnt even make it through a few "back to the 80s" songs on the radio tonight.

The crown reigns supreme.

There's a reason that Sony cost $5...if that Crown had "richer" bass...something is wrong with that Sony!!! :hmmm: :-O

Great score though!

That is certainly NOT a classic FH or it would've been such a slaughter.
 so true.

I just like these kinds of comparisons because it shows why we collect these early 80s boomboxes, like the crown. Lots of frills on the sony, but the classic hifi sound just wasn't there.

Many Golden Era boxes just had a unique sound it can be hard to describe in concrete terms. For me it's mostly in the upper frequencies but it can also be a unique bass sound.Though I've never heard a 950,this is certainly true for me with the CSC-850.There are boxes with more bass but the 850 just has a unique laid back "spacey" sound to my ears that it would be hard for me to describe for everyone in a completely understandable way.
