Sony CFS-900 (1985 Auto Reverse box) slack belt...?

It appears either that the belt is too slack to turn the cam reliably when attempting to auto reverse, or that the cam hangs up halfway when moving the cog from the take up reel in fwd to the reel for reverse play. Also, the switch that controls which tracks pick up the signal seems to get stuck sometimes too, playing both tracks at once....

Should I be thinking about replacing the belts (or using a rubber restorative for the short term), or should I be oiling the camshafts and such and leaving the belts alone? FF and REV work fine and so does play direction once the cam has fully engaged (although even when the reels are engaged and operational, sometimes both tracks are still picking up signal.)

Got it open again, and I think the belt and cam are fine. It seems like either the metal plates that rock the rollers between the capstans or the one that gets pushed by the cam to move all those plates has some friction that's holding it up. I'll post a picture of the transport later today

Most problems lie with the main drive belt from the motor. There can be one or two. Replace these first and reassemble and test. There must be enough tension so there is no slippage under load. .
