Sony CFS - 71

Hi Everyone, new to the forum. I found a Sony CFS-71s at the dump. The thing is a little rough but pretty awesome and partially working. I’ve cleaned it up but I want to get the tape deck working. Is anyone familiar and has a manual or any information regarding this model. There doesn’t seem to be a lot out there. I’m slowly figuring out the controls since the menu plate fell off the top a long time ago. I appreciate the help.

Also, the tape deck isn’t that accessible with the radio parts in the way. Looking for any advice on how to remove the tape deck without breaking something.

Welcome aboard, Ernest! Sony definitely had some quality machines back then. Much like Sharp, Sony packed their boomboxes tightly with all that quality. Belts are among the simplest things on a boombox to work on - not necessarily the easiest. :-D

I just uploaded a service manual for the CFS-71 to the Boomboxery Library, which can be accessed with the link in the main menu of the site. Here is the direct link for the manual:

Be sure to take lots of pictures as you disassemble the Sony. That helps tremendously when you forget where a screw or a wire goes.

The PRB belt cross-reference list shows two belts for the Sony CFS-71:

FRX9.2
SCQ6.0

For information on decoding, see this post:

Thanks for uploading the manual and belt info Fatdog! This is exactly what I need! I wondered what I was getting myself into when I first opened it up. I'll check the belts for replacement. As for the tape deck, FF and Reverse work, Play does not. Hoping it will just be a matter of cleaning and adjusting, I'm not sure there are parts available.
