Sony CFD-550 rebuild needed

Hi all,

Newbie here, after finding this forum after a Google search. I’m the original owner of a ‘97 Sony CFD-550 and the CD player quit working last year. I had it repaired by a so-called experienced repairman, but it’s quit working again. Can anyone recommend a trusted repairman to take a swing at fixing my beloved boombox?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

Just buy a better one. I thought I wanted the box I had as a kid. Now I want the box I could not afford back then.

Welcome to the forum.
After the CD player stopped working a year after the repair,
I can guess what kind of "master" you came across.
He probably didn't change the optic,
but only adjusted the power of the laser and it damaged.

There are two options:
1 - buy a new cassette player with a CD player - Sony cfd-s70 or something similar.
There are different models, but the quality is not very good.
2 - repair this one.
It needs to be opened and cleaned, replaced the belts on the cassette decks.
See what model the optic is (KSS 210 or something similar).
Buy new optic and replace them.
It's hard to find a master these days who can do all this at an affordable price.
My advice is to look for another master in your city.
Discuss the repair and the price and make a decision - repair or buy something new.
If you can't find a master, you can try to repair it yourself,
but if you don't have experience, you will have a hard time.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies! It might seem silly to some, but I’m really fond of this old boombox. Being career military, I’ve taken it with me all around the world and back. I’m not gonna say “money’s no limitation “, but I am willing to spend a reasonable amount to have it fixed. Can anybody recommend a reputable repair guy for it?

In order for us to help you, you need to share where you live.
If there is a member from your area and he has information, he can recommend a service center.
But most members have done maintenance on their boomboxes themselves.
You can also search on the Internet.

I live in Europe, on the other side of the world from you.
I hope you get lucky and someone living nearby can help you.

Fat Dog,

THANKS for the info! What happens is that the CD player will power up, but as soon as the “play” button is pressed, the screen will read “no CD”. Do you or anyone else have a thought as to what that indicates?

Usually when you insert a disc it spins for about 10 seconds
and the display shows the total time and number of songs.
Then you press play and it starts with the first song.

1 - If you insert the disc and it spins and after 10 seconds it says "no disc",
then the problem is in the optical lens - it needs to be replaced.

2 - If you insert the disc and it DOES NOT spin and it says "no disc",
then the problem is more serious and more complex...

Which of the two is your case 1 or 2?
