Picked this up on ebay, one of the earliest boomboxes, from the early to mid 70's. all in great working order.

Nice example and video of what I believe is the first successful boombox.(suitcase style stereo am/fm cassete-corder) First introduced in 1971, the CF=550 set the standard for the industry. The quality of materials and construction was really never matched by other brands. Sony even made their own transistors in those days. Sony themselves had to cut corners on quality by 1980-81 as sales world wide took off on BBX's and the price war was on.

If you like the CF-550, keep an eye out for the CF-580 from 1976...the quality is amazing. It's not that big a box, but tips the scale at 18 lbs, wth batteries.

I wrote this on the 580 a couple of years ago - http://www.antiqueradio.com/Dec09_Hayden_SonyCF580.html

I'm glad you like it Andrew, it's a nice piece of kit, and to get one that hasn't been abused on a building site was a bonus.
The lady I bought it off begged me to look after it, she was grateful that it was going to a collector and would be used regularly.

Nice write up on the 580 too, thanks for the link.
