I took some boxes outside a few days ago to take some pics. I kinda hate taking pictures inside 'cause the color is NEVER accurate and no amount of iPhoto doctoring can fix 'em 100%! Until I get some bulbs with the proper color temperature, I won't be taking that many pics of my boxes inside the house. That said, enjoy!
Btw, if anybody's seen the "Babes and Boxes" features I had months ago and went back to check 'em out recently, you'll notice that most - if not all - of those pictures have been deleted. As much as I liked those pics, I also hated 'em for the reasons stated above. I'm a perfectionist! Someday, I'll reshoot and repost... They'll be MUCH better and won't be deleted.

Lasonic i931ww:
- It's obviously brand new so theres no need to talk about the condition...
The day I took most of these pics, I had it blasting outside on the steps of my house for about 4 hours... It's loud like a Lasonic should be, has very good high end and the bass sounds better outside than it does inside. Still, the woofer baffles need to be cut to get better boom...
Out of the entire i931 line-up, I'll give this version a 10/10 when it comes to looks. I'll give it 7/10 when it comes to sound, but if I cut the woofer baffles, that might bump it up to 8/10. Ergonomics get 3/10 'cause fully operating this box (and the iPod) from either the front panel or the remote control is a bitch!
That said, I'd still recommend this box to anybody who's interested in buying one.
Toyota EA900:
- I haven't recorded music on a boombox since the early 90's... That said, the box is fully functional as far as I know. However, the decks are somewhat muffled when playing tapes...
There's only 3 problems with the box... the tape selection switch was broken off prior to me getting it, one of the grilles has a screw in one of the corner mounts to keep that side secure (which is why I didn't take pictures of the box with the grilles on), and the box arrived from Tokyo with a nice long crack in side of the back panel that I sloppily fixed (it looks good from afar but up close, it looks far from good)...
This box is VERY loud but doesn't impress me much when it comes to bass or highs. I think it needs some newer and better tweeters, but I can live with the way the bass sounds for the most part. Still, I just don't see how anybody can turn the "Super Woofer" knobs up to the max and think that this thing sounds good. It doesn't - not to me anyway. Maybe it's only my "777" that sounds bad...
This box is VERY heavy - I can't imagine carrying this around for more than 20 minutes at a time before desperately needing to put it down!
I'll give it a 6/10 when it comes to looks and 5/10 when it comes to sound.
Sony Zilba'p CFS-V8:
- Fully functional as far as I'm concerned. Again, I don't do recording tho...
Not the best sounding box I have, but it's sound is probably the best balanced. I've never driven it to it's limits, but it does get loud without distortion. Has pretty good bass but not for any music with an 808 bass kick. The high end could be a little better and the box could use a "stereo wide" feature to take advantage of the 3-way speaker action, but I can't really complain...
The only real drawback this box has is that the tuning dial only goes up to 90 MHz on FM, so the only time I use the radio is when I listen to an AM news station before I go to work...
Loaded with 8 "D" batteries, this thing has some heft to it.
With the grilles off or on and that beautiful woodgrain plasitc, this is certainly THE CLASSIEST looking box I own. I just wish it had dual antennas. I'd like to get the grilles redone with new material because of small holes and scrapes...
Still, it's near mint so I'll give it a 9.5/10 when it comes to looks, 7/10 when it comes to sound.
Hitachi Perdisco TRK-8600RM:
- This box has 2 issues... The power switch is faulty - it has to be toggled up and down ____ amount of times to get the box to stay on. I won't stop toggling until the power light is a steady bright red. Not doing so results in the sound fading until the power eventually shuts off. But hey, once it's on, it stays on until I shut it off by hand. The other problem is that the tape deck doesn't work and the motor is constantly on (there's a very low, almost unnoticeable hum) as long there's power flowing into the box...
Overall, it doesn't have the best sound and the bass distorts easily if you crank it past "4" or play something with some boom, but it sounds pretty good at low volume ("4" and under). Has some of the best highs of any of the boxes I own - never bright! Wish it had a "stereo wide" feature...
This is my favorite box simply because of the color. Like I said with the Sony tho, I wish this box had dual antennas. Other than a couple of scratches here and there and on the tuning plastic + an almost unnoticeable scuff near the right woofer, this box is in great physical condition...
I'll give an 8/10 when it comes to looks. When it comes to sound, a 7.5/10.
There it is!
