Hello, This is my first post here and my second boombox over 25 years i think! I got this rare beauty couple weeks ago and now I've cleaned and serviced it and mods are coming later (I think bluetooth and/or Raspberry PI or something).

About Silver Shin-Shirasuna Electric Co.

Silver was the Brand Label for Pocket Radios from the Shin-Shirasuna Electric Corp. (Shirasuna Denki MFG. Co. Ltd.) Shin-Shirasuna Electric Co. was a medium-sized Japanese electric company. Its predecessor, Shirasuna Electric, went bankrupt in the recession in 1957. Between 1964 and 1968, Shin-Shirasuna established 5 satellite plants in depopulated rural areas of Japan. Between 1978 and 1982, Shin-Shirasuna closed down most of its domestic plants because of the drastic appreciation of Japanese Yen and acute export competition. By 1984, Taiwan had become the main production base of Shin-Shirasuna which had started its Operation in the Kaohsiung. With the downturn of the electronic industry in the 80s, Shin-Shirasuna reduced its work force in Taiwan and opened a new plant in Malaysia. Around the same time frame, Shin-Shirasuna acquired failing Harman- Kardon consumer electronics business unit from Chicago-based corporate behemoth Beatrice Foods which it sold back to Harman-Kardon in 1985. Later absorbed by the giant Hitachi group of companies. In 1994 the company was renamed to Technol Ace Corporation, which continued to be a primary manufacturer for Harman-Kardon audio equipment until it was absorbed by Hitachi Group Corp. // Copy/paste from stero80s.com.

All works like new, just few scratches here and there. I don't have any ideas how to treat these (black paint) scratches at the moment so any help would be appreciated. Took some pictures of the cleaning process:

Also managed to get my hands on a original User Manual! View attachment Silver SR2040L.pdf

Hi, I think that i've gone straight into the deep end with boomboxes, but i've done this with Mercedes cars and other electronics before. It just came to me about a month ago when i needed "party speaker" donor. Didn't find one. Then found this Silver and got some kind of a deja vu from my teenager years and now I'm looking for another boombox! :) Actually found it but seller from ebay.co.uk won't answer about shipping outside UK. Maybe you already know these cheap MAXIM Sharp clones. Really want one but can't have it. So meanwhile I'm dealing with this Silver. :)

Ah, the Maxims! They don't spear to have a very reputation for build quality and durability, they're a bit of a gamble (so I hear).

I don't care the clone quality for heavily modded party boombox. I want the looks! I don't want to (or dare) throw out the internals of the Silver or Sharp or JVC etc, but easily with Maxim! :) This half broken cheap Maxim would be perfect for this project.

I'm thinking that this Silver will get some minor mods like sound deadning mats into speakers and phono input bluetooth. Maybe little volt mod to increase the power output. This Toshiba TA7282AP works fine with 12V. Oh and the FM antenna is borken, new one is on the way.

Thanks for the positive feedback. :-)

Silver speakers got Dynamat treatment - from plastic sound to mdf/wooden box would sound like, okay not that good but a lot better! :)

Also tried to replace that ridiculous tweeter, actually its broken, no sound and no resistance. Then connencted Alpine tweeter - WOW - Amazing! I think best way to describe this is to take a pillow and put it in front of the speaker and then take it away!

Thanks! Left to right - Nakamichi, Rockford-Fosgate, Alpine - 10 to 15y old from my Mercedes c140 sound project. :)

Tried these also, too big, won't fit without cutting. :(

Yes exactly! Yesterday was good day for me. Local store ordered these cheap SHARP WF-939 clones and I went to buy couple of these for myself. Damn I'm so lucky that this UK ebay seller did not answer. :-) This Maxim or International has indeed very low build quality comapared to original Sharp. Sound was quite okay but volume buttons and eq buttos were disaster. Volume jumped like crazy when you move the button like 1mm and eq buttons don't work like they should. I don't know how to say that but speaker box lines where the box come apart did not match with each other smoothly or lines were like waves - awful and the spectrum analyzer - I do NOT have any words, this was nightmare!

But on the picture it looks very good compared to "in real life"

Got an idea, why not to try another amplifier with more power like 2x15W. Original is 2x2.5W into 4Ohm. Found ultra small (2.5x2.5cm/1x1inch no heatsink requierd) ~5$ amp (class-D) at Aliexpress. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/PAM8610-2x15W-amplifier-board-digital-two-channel-stereo-Class-D-power-amplifier-board-mini/32401259717.html?ws_ab_test=201526_5,201527_1_71_72_73_74_75,201409_3

Original amp has 10% THD, this has 0.1-0.2% THD at 5W. It works 7-12V and 2x15W into 8Ohm, perfect I think. :-)

Tried this little amp. It is very good for the price. Sound is loud and clear but it needs more power than original amp so have to change power supply also. When I find bigger transformer, then I'll do this mod definetly.

Also changed original speakers with slightly bigger Sanyo speakers. Not a big difference but clear improvement at low end!
