Hello, I'm new to this forum!

I've always wanted a 80's style boombox, while browsing the facebook marketplace I saw an person selling a Panasonic 5085 for $2. He said "I tried to plug it in and feed a phone to it, and it basically made a zapping noise and smelled like burned circuit boards"

I have some experience in working on electronics, mostly modding and recapping old video game systems and arcade monitors.

What are the chances of bringing it back to life? Is it worth the trouble? I've never worked on a boombox before.

Thanks!

I'd give that a shot if it were me, $2 is nothing, especially if you have experience in fixing games consoles as a lot of it is pretty much the same stuff. Go for it!

I would never have any luck in my area for vintage Panny RX 5000 series asking price of $2! Killer deal! So what is status of your findings? You take it apart yet? These radios like most Pannys are well thought out boomers to fix, belt changes, etc. wonder if previous owner plugged it into a more higher voltage outlet like a 220. I cooked a Panny RX-5050 by plugging it in at my friends house. There was an outlet not marked or looked any different than a standard 120 volt outlet. I think it was just dedicated to a window AC unit that drew 220 and someone ran a line to wall. The house was built in the 30s, so they would install outlets way down on baseboard. I was disappointed.
