On friday when my parents and I came back from visiting family in west Germany, we stopped in good old Dessau to pick up some nice turntables which are two VZ2000s .
The reason why I got two is simply that I planned to make one good working box out of two.
As it looks right now, I have found the one to fully fix up.
Both started out very dirty and gave no sound at all .
Then, after finding the INT/EXT speaker switch on the back both came to life .
One only gave sound from one side though...but after a while I discovered that I only needed to move the balance slider to get the dirt out of it and since then it has been working nicely.
Cassette decks work on both units .
One has FM reception problems and I think it is only a loose connection in the function board rather than the whole tuner.
ANYWAY, I decided to clean one of them which was the one with a working power switch and after a little while and lots of Q-Tips it looks really nice again now...far from being mint but at least good to display .
It plays tapes, has FM stereo reception and I plugged in my iPod too. Only the turntable needs a new belt....as it is common on these units.
So here are some pictures of the cleaning process...the aluminum part and the front plate on top came out really nice and I really enjoy the looks of it.
Here are pictures of the cleaning process with a (to me) shocking before and after effect.
Well...and the other one. A HUGE thanks to madbadger there who made this very perfect photo series how to strip a VZ2000. Following his steps I was able to complete disassemble this second one and I wan to clean it now and fix the power switch mainly.
I have seen the remains of the old belt on the turntable and wonder if I would be able to change it myself...
If I am, I will also be happy to make this part work again. The VZ 2000 is one of the coolest boxes to disassemble because you find out so much and are always surprised about thing...I was kinda impressed when I found this fabric stuff in the woofers which I have never seen on any other boombox before...
Well, he is our good old friend, naked
