I’ve just acquired a Sharp GF9191
The radio works but neither of the vu meters work, also the stereo indicator light does not light up. Sound from the speakers is poor and intermittent lots of radio Interference. Vu meter moves when back light is operated.
Thankyou

Hello!

As new member, you probably did not manage to check all the previous posts on BB restoration.

Generally speaking, the first step is cleaning. Always, the first thing is one big slider full of contacts that are probably dirty, rusted and god know what kind of gunk is inside.
Thankfully, the chemical industry has come up with several sprays (Contact, Cleaner, etc.) If you are in a pinch, and do not have access to such spray cans, you can try cleaning alcohol or if you are in isolation, some kind of desinfectant. Spray-clean the slider liberally, and give it a go 20-50 times.

If you don't know what it is, take a look at page 16 of the pdf of service manual in Boomboxery library: https://www.mediafire.com/file/6wupjkjxwi56g9u/Sharp_GF-9191_H_E_HB_Service_Manual.pdf/file The slider (SW102, I guess) is roughly in the middle of the main board.

After that, repeat cleaning of all other switches, and do not forget headphone jack, and power switch in the power jack. Try to avoid electrocution, and other damages...

Finally, let all of it dry for twice as long as you think it should, and then test again. If it works, then you could use some kind of spray for contact lubrication and preservation, because these are old, used switches that will go bad again on you if you do not take care of them.

Have fun!

Would you recommend taking the back off the unit to spray inside the switches also ?

Oh... you have to take the unit apart at least in some measure. There is no point to spray the potentiometers, switches and so on just from the outside.
Have fun and be safe!
