Does anyone have Sharp GF-9797? Just curious how it sounds compared to GF-9090/9191/9494/9696! :-)

Bredgeo is the man when it comes to these Sharps. He doesn't rate this one very high on the sound scale in comparison to the other sharp GF-9*** series boxes.

Thanks, Don. Ya, I just looked at the specs, and it is somewhat worse than GF-9696H. And a lot worse than GF-9696Z. Strange - I thought GF-9797 would be an upgrade to GF-9696 :hmmm:

Makes sense but apparently not the case, like many manufacturers they started cutting corners in the early 80's. Think of the M80, it's not better than the M70 except for maybe the cassette mechanism which nowadays is a bigger pain in the arse than the M70 deck.

I would respectfully disagree - GF-9797 was made in 1981 - same year as GF-9696 and GF-777 and such. I actually thought that GF-9797 was a higher end model compared to GF-9696 since it had a digital tuner - probably a big deal for 1981

Well somebody F'd up and thought the digital tuner would make it cool so they probably cut corners else where. Maybe to the marketers at Sharp they thought they could get away with the higher number is better assumption. Do we know what the 9797 actually retailed for?

They probobly figured with the digital tuner and full logic deck that it was top of the line even though they skimped on the amp and features.

I agree it doesn't seem as impressive as GF-9696. As far as features though - I don't think anything is missing - just the amp is weaker than GF-9696

ey up vladi, as far as i know it sounds much the same as the 8989 and although the 8989 is a good box i wouldn't go out my way to get a 9797

Hi Vlad-I have a GF-8989II a GF-9191X,Gf-9595H and I just love em' all.
Now I've been looking at a GF-9696 and at 58 watts draw this thing has to be the bomb!!
But I actually like the 9797 even more because it looks so damn cool!!
It's like it the 9595's big brother.
I'd like to know what the specs are on the 9696 vs. the 9797.
I can't read Russian and these ads are so cool Vlad-Thanks!!
Vlad-Don't you have a nice 9696??
I'm really wanting to get one of those.
Have a great week-GB. :-)

Thanks all for the responses! I'll post some better pics when I get it - the seller has already shipped it, so it should only be a couple of days!
Ya, I used to have two 9696s - but sold them both - can't remember why - probably was drunk, as usual

Vladi the 9696 is a must have it's too bad you sold yours. My buddy JT loves his it's his baby, besides the little champ David he comes first!

JT gave me a heads up :-) on the 9797 but opted not to acquire it. I've been advised by numerous members here about it the quality is just not there.

Killer looks but other than that nothing more. :sadno:

Thanks, Ford!
Ya, I've heard those opinions as well, but I disagree. 9797 could be a perfect bedroom boombox, where sound doesn't matter, but the looks do - to impress the ladies
