I have a Sharp GF-9090 Boombox and with some tapes it runs fine with but with others it stops and then the play button pops back up or the tape doesn't spin... I have replaced the belt at the back and the ones at the front seem fine to me, what would be causing this? would it be the tape itself? Or motor maybe?

I have only got into tapes and boomboxes so i don't really know alot.

What is Cr02 and Fe-C1?

And does dolby cassettes only work on machines that support it?

any help would be great,

Manythanks David.

It sounds like your tape reels are to tight in the cassette case. Probably due to sitting in the sun and getting melted . Normal, Cr02 ,Fe-C1, and Metal are the type of tape actually in the cassette case. Dolby is a type of noise filter encoding that can be decoded on cassette players that have that feature. And the Dolby encoded tape can be played on players with out Dolby decoders but it will just have more noise. A owners manual may be a good thing for you to read to start learning the basics. Good day!

Thanks for the reply!

If my cassette reels are to tight is there a way to reduce that? I have brought new old ones that have never been played.

if the cassettes are new and turn freely, I'd clean and inspect the pinch roller. The pinch roller is what actually pulls the tape out of the cassette case and across the magnetic pickup / head and the take-up reel pulls it back into the cassette case. If the take-up reel isn't doing its job the Pinch roller will eat the tape. If the pinch roller isn't doing its job the tape won't get pulled out of the case in the first place. Another problem I've seen is that the Capstan needs to be cleaned and oiled. When it gets dry and dirty it adds a lot of friction. I have the gf-8989 and I like it, nice box with good sound.

Yep i took it apart again today and i am going to oil it and also i found that whoever owned it before me used a crappy plastic to replace something and it needs to be rubber so i will have to definitely do that, i think it was slipping because it was plastic and smooth plastic on rubber won't work lol.
