Latest addition to my collection, a Sharp GF-8585.

I would like to get get some hints and tips (newbie) from you guys on how to restore and save this bad boy :
# paint and plastics are dented, chrome gone etc. - what is the best way to fix this.
# tape deck is hungry when playd ;-( and quits almost directly. FF and REW work.
# There's some "woodwork" inside - what does this do?? looks like somebodies been inside before..... :-)
# Anyone in possesion of a (service)manual that u would like to share?

I do love a GF

The tape deck is an easy answer...every GF seems to have the gooey capstan issue...theres a little rubber bit around the capstan shaft that needs replacing as it goes to mush. If you search the forum you'll find its very common and there'll be tips on how to do it....done it numerous times myself and its not difficult :-D Might need new belts as well but again its not difficult....all of mine have needed the capstan doing but the belts were fine.

I've no idea what the hell those wooden bits are for!! :w00t:

If the paintwork and chrome is knackered then I'd do a full strip down and respray

Yep, just what northerner said. I'm surprised nobody has done a DIY yet on this, I think I have the photos of doing one of my boxes once I'll have to check. Heck maybe I'll even throw up a DIY if I ever get time..

Your photo is so clear that I thought I will show you what Northerner said about cassette.

There is a 5mm dia rubber wheel inside the capstan housing that drives the white plastic take-up wheel that you see.

Great stuff! Thx a lot guys! I will try to do this. Excuses for getting to techy on thuis topic.

For the chrome parts I'm thinking about chrome spray paint of some kind. Body work spray paint as well. anyone who has some good experience with that!? And how to get a few of these nasty holes and scratches fixed!?

I bought some 'actual' chrome spraypaint for my boomboxes and other bits which either cannot be replated or I can't afford to :-)
It's high-lustre super-thinned incredibly fine metallic and must be dusted very lightly onto a perfect finish of black (all imperfections MUST be repaired and primed) until the chrome effect is seen. Then allowed to 'flash off' and coated with a nice even thin coat of clear. It's the closest we can get to chrome without actually plating or metalizing.
Also you can buy superfine chrome FX vinyl wrap and stick it on, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to cut out around the grilles on your model.
I'm trialing the chrome paint soon on a Hot Wheels chassis and a TRK-8600 knob :-D
