Hey guys,

I have been working on restoring the 777 I picked up yesterday. It didn't have any screws in the box and was taped together. Getting that tape off was a nightmare! :freddy:

I am ready to put the case together and am having an issue finding screws. I pulled a screw out of my other 777 to take to home depot. With help from the screw isle guy I still couldn't find any matches. I picked up the closest match I could find. Well, it wasn't close enough! :nonono:

Do you guys know the specs on what size screws I need? If you have replaced these where have you found your replacements?

Thanks!

Sorry reptile dude. Those long 3"+ screws don't exist in those thin guages. UNLESS of course you order about 20,000 of them. No, seriously, no joking. That's what I was told when I went into a specialty fastener shop. They checked all the suppliers and that was the answer. They would have to be custom made and that is the minimum. You can get machine screws of course but the threads are too fine for plastic.

Your best bet is to get the thicker ones and someone tap the holes bigger without cracking or snapping off the screw towers -- not an easy task at all.

Of course if you should luck out and find a supplier with boombox sized screws, please do share.

my 2 cents is that the available machine screws are not too fine for plastic --
--there is really not much pressure --on the SEVERAL balanced screws -
to keep a box together-
just DONT strip the tap --by giving the screws that 'one extra turn' :nonono: :-)

My experience is that the GF-777 will want to be tight, especially around the cassette area otherwise the tape does not play right. As for the "fine -ness" of the threads -- most machine screws are fine so fine that they don't cut threads, rather, they will grind/file out the plastic. If all you want is to be able to keep the case together, sheetrock screws are thin enough and the threads will work, especially the fine ones, and you can get them in lengths up to 3.5" (file or grind them shorter if you need to) and they do work. BUT they are ugly as sin and the heads can sometimes be too big for the hole and the heads are tapered rather than pan-head.

Its not ideal, but you could use course thread "Decking Screws". They are used for outdoor wood patio decks.

OR, you could find 9 REALLY good friends to pull one screw out of their 777 and give it to you!
